Ummm our last two test captains and arguably best batsmen this millennium were given a chance before they were in the best 6 bats in the country because of potential and the need to add youth.
Ponting and Clarke turned out alright,
We need to build a side our best eleven is NOT good enough
Ponting was in the best 6 bats when he got picked.
Very very very debatable especially considering you had the likes of Martyn, Langer, Elliott, Maher, Lehmann and co scoring a ton of shield runs as well, also Blewett who was dropped for him was considered slightly unlucky. (According to ESPN cricket site)
You then also had Stuart Law playing in that test who at the time was making a bucket load of runs.
In the end the decision obviously turned out to be the right one.
