Agree but if a team can have a decent all rounder it can turn an ok side into a very good side.

Australia don't have a decent all rounder though.

No. Haven't had one since mal was a child.

If you can't get a decent score out of your countries best 6 then your screwed.

Who are those 2 most dominant sides ?

Im guessing Windies of the 80's and Aussies of the mid 90's to mid 2000's

Ummm our last two test captains and arguably best batsmen this millennium were given a chance before they were in the best 6 bats in the country because of potential and the need to add youth.

Ponting and Clarke turned out alright,

We need to build a side our best eleven is NOT good enough

Ponting was in the best 6 bats when he got picked.

Very very very debatable especially considering you had the likes of Martyn, Langer, Elliott, Maher, Lehmann and co scoring a ton of shield runs as well, also Blewett who was dropped for him was considered slightly unlucky. (According to ESPN cricket site)

You then also had Stuart Law playing in that test who at the time was making a bucket load of runs.

In the end the decision obviously turned out to be the right one.

How many tests did Hodge and Elliot play?

Might give you Elliot as he was cut short by injury but for such a big state they have produced no quality Aust batsmen since Jones.
Even SA has had Blewett and Lehmann in that time

Mind you producing Warne all could be forgiven

I agree just the commentators have a man crush on calling him an all rounder.

Last test sides at number 1

Saf- Kallis
Eng- Flintoff
Aus- Symonds

Flintoff was a poor mans Kallis, symonds in tests a poor mans flintoff.
Symonds in ODIs a different story

Flintoff is one of the most overrated cricketers in history. Had a couple of good games against Australia but apart from that a very average career.

Was reading a book where they credited Symonds being in the side for extending Dizzy Gillespies career by a year and a bit because he was then able to be bowled more efficiently in his latter stages.

Look I'm not saying play an all rounder for the sake of it, apart from Watson and then maybe a couple of spinning all rounders in India, we don't have one good enough.

But it's very naive to not think a good all rounder is a massive advantage especially if u don't have the McGrath, Warne, Gillespie, Lee luxury

What I'm saying is you pick your best side. Not for the future, not because of the belief an all rounder makes a team better automatically and certainly not because of this theory that players need to be rotated.
