Australia have a good record of not appointing too many bad skippers, and Waugh, POnting, Clarke and Border were/are good, but having been too young to have seen Chappelli, Tubs is easily the best we've had since the late 70's.

REckon Tubs has it about right in this article re Ponting's captaincy, Waugh was similar, and Border would have been in a strong team of strong personalities.

Nope. Just pointing out you didn't have to look too far back to find a better skipper than Punter. Only Kim Hughes and Graham Yallop would be behind Punter in my time. Chappell, Taylor and Pup the best for mine. Border gets a lot of praise and quite rightly as he led from Example but tactically I reckon he let the game drift at times, mainly because of the strength of the teams he was leading.

Went out today so didn't see the Saffers innings. Was it his field placement or bowler rotation that was weak? Normally he is quite good in both departments. We have also completely changed our attack which hasn't happened since the 19th Century...this could be a factor as the element of surprise is now perhaps gone.

A combination of field placings and plans. Unusually for Clarke I thought he was slow to react and let things drift for a tad to long. Persisted with the 6&3 field when maybe a spell from Johnson or Starc with some short stuff may have been worth a try earlier

I think having a bowler in the team really helps his captaincy. I thought our popgun attack was exposed, not Clarke.

I love it when Graeme Smith's Saffies get smashed for 5-6 an over on a batters paradise at the tiny AO with Tahir, Klienveldt and no Kallis, his announced a spud captain, joke, pea heart etc etc etc

When Clarkes 5 bowlers go for 6-7 an over on a decent bowling deck he just doesn't have the cattle.

Lol

I rate Clarke as a captain but yesterday was not one of his finer days!

Sorry, not yourself but many on here were very vocal about smith in Adelaide yet seem to have gone all quiet.

I guess we'll see how good a captain Pup is now that Ponting won't be there mentoring him from now on. Let's re-evaluate in 12 months time shall we?

A legend in his own mind.
He definitely rates himself as our best; I'm not sure his record stacks up & he did have some outstanding players at his disposal.

How soon we forget the 2005 Ashes series. He had Warne and McGrath and lost the urn. Sending England in straight after we lost McGrath was a **** of the highest order that Pup will be hard pressed to emulate. Imagine if Pup had Warne, Gilchrist, McGrath, Hayden, Langer. His captaincy consistently lacked imagination and his field placement was consistently diabolical. Great batsmen but very poor tactically as a skipper for mine. Just because he is about to retire doesn't suddenly make him a better captain. He was very average as captain.

Agreed REB. However, Clarke does have a big say in selection does he not? Have the bowling changes in this match all worked?

I'm not sure how much of a say the Capitano has in selection of teams in a home series. It's certainly an unusual tactic to replace the entire attack. It seemed to catch the Saffers out on Day 1 but these blokes aren't the number one team in the world for nothing. The fact remains that since the end of the Warne/McGrath era we are struggling to consistently crack through the top order of the stronger teams (SA and England) and we are struggling to finish off Test matches. We've played pretty well this Summer so far but we look like the number three team at the moment.
