I would pick Lara before anyone else but the world would be a boring place if we all agreed. Personally i think Tendulkar is massively over rated and is not on the same level as Ponting, Kallis or Lara. Take away the soft runs he's made on the subcontinent against impotent bowling and then judge. No doubt a great player but not anywhere near the player the media and Indians would have you believe.

Crickey that was tough. I chose Marshall over the West Indian great fast bowlers because I thought he was better in non favourable conditions. I chose Kallis as the all rounder over all of the greats of the eighties because of his sheer consistency with bat and ball which continues to this day. I chose Richards over Lara because if Viv actually cared about records I believe that Lara's deeds may have been eclipsed. I thought Haydos was a walk up start for one of the opener position but the other one was a bit harder. I thought Haynes was better for longer than Greenidge so I chose him. Probably Greenidge/Haynes or Hayden/Langer would be the better selection if this side were to ever take the field. Sunil Gavaskar is another who is probably worth a mention.
Gilly's desctructive batting give him the edge over others who were superior glovemen such as Alan Knott, Rod Marsh and Ian Healy. Punter and Sachin were walk up starts for mine edging out Lara but only Lara had the brains to retire while still at the top. Which only leaves three legendary Australian bowlers. Test matches are won by bowlers as was proven by the powerful West Indian teams of the seventies and eighties and the Aussie champion teams of the nineties and noughties. Dennis Lillee was the best fast bowler I have ever seen. He didn't have the back up of the West Indians (although obviously he had more than Imran Khan) but he managed to take a lot of wickets against the best opposition such as his bag in the Rest of the World game and his performances against the cream of world cricket in World Series Crickets (79 wickets I think he got in Supertests).
Warne and McGrath's performances speak for themselves. These guys would have a wicket against their name by simply walking on the field. Just ask Daryl Cullinan or Micheal Atherton. Warne is the best best bowler I have ever seen and if he only had brains when he was batting he could have been remembered as the best all rounder as well. McGrath was just a bowling machine. He must have been a nightmare to face. Kind of like the guy you play against who is in his fifties in club cricket and you know he is just going to nag away at you all day...except Pidge would be doing this at 135 and would be mean as hell while doing it.
Perhaps the unluckiest player not to make my list is Wasim Akram. An absolute freak who at his best looked absolutely unplayable. But unlike Kallis he wasn't as consistent so he falls into the non-selected all rounder category. Plenty of Lara lovers will be wondering why I left him out but despite his undoubted ability and flair I reckon he's a bit behind the players I have selected.
