May z it wasn't given not out because where it was pitched, it was given not out because where it hit his foot. Two completely different things

Looked dead-set plumb, DRS showed it crashing into middle and off, it hit inline with the stumps, just not within the different strike zone this time around.
The zone has been shifted to be measured between the centre of the off and leg stump now. So last year, that was out.

How much has the cricketing world changed in the 12 years I've been away? I understand they've got some pretty cool technology now, saw it on YouTube, surely it should now just be a straightforward "if his leg wasn't there, it would've hit the wicket: out!"

Oh I see, so the technology isn't quite 100% accurate all the time. So the doubt rests in favor of the batsman yeh?

Depending on the umpire's call. If it strikes the batsman completely outside the line, it is not out, if it is marginal, as this one appeared to be, the umpire's call stands. If it clearly struck in line, and was going on to his the stumps, it's out.
The ball would have struck in line with the stumps had the zone not been narrowed slightly.

I reckon the lbw referrals should simply ask if the batsmen has hit it. If not, call of the ump.
