(Miscellaneous debris)

Labor, Liberal, Greens, Democrats? Here's the place to discuss.

TREASURER Wayne Swan was still present when a joke was made about Opposition Leader Tony Abbott's female Chief of Staff Peta Credlin and made a speech after the comedian's performance.
A distasteful and offensive joke about Ms Credlin was made at a Labor union dinner last night attended by Julia Gillard and senior Cabinet Ministers.
"The comedian’s comments were clearly very inappropriate and offensive. There’s no place for those kinds of comments and I made that clear to the union this morning," Mr Swan said.

The PM this morning called the union and expressed her anger at the joke.

Very disappointing to hear of this. However, good to see Wayne Swan and Julia Gillard both phoning to register a complaint.
Now if only Tony Abbott or some other leading Liberals had done the same re Alan Jones!

They did say his comments were inappropriate bulldog and it was very well documented if you cared to look

But it doesn't fit in with the picture they are trying to paint.

Yes, but it took Tony Abbott two days to say anything at all on the Alan Jones comment. He said it was inappropriate and then in the next breath said he supports Alan Jones.

I am also pretty certain that no one from the Liberal Party phoned Alan Jones to say how inappropriate the comment was. Various members of the Labor Party phoned the organisers of their event to register their complaint.

Admittedly, full credit to Malcom Turnbull for his criticism of Alan Jones. He distanced himself very much from Tony Abbott.
I could quite accept Turnbull as a future Prime Minister.

Cheers

To be honest though, they pretty much have to shoot this down (or look to be doing so) after the way they have carried on over Alan Jones.

True, although I do see a statement blaiming the Prime Minister for the death of her father to be a far worse action than a joke. Admittedly, I do not know what the joke was so cannot comment fully.
No matter what, the joke was definitely uncalled for though.

They are just words said by third parties my friend, very different story if they were said by a sitting MP... the whole saga should not even be mentioned in parliment... Personally feel that ALP are using a lot of this hot air as a distraction to what is happening and using it to attack the character of Abbott. Don't think it will wash with the public in the long run.

Maybe not, but as the Prime Minister recounted the other day, there have been many many many comments made by the Leader of the Opposition degrading her and other women in positions of power.

The PM has called the Leader of the Opposition sexiest and a misogynist many times - I think that is pretty degrading. The difference???

I would be very worried if the PM did call the Leader of the Opposition 'sexiest' ;)
Then again, when Tony is in those budgie smugglers.... and when compared to Andrew Mathieson

Yes, I take your point re her ONE statement that Mr. Abbott is a misogynist and her several about him being sexist.
Neither the PM or Leader of the Oppostion are acting as they should be at present.

The worry that I have with the Leader of the Oppostion though is that he seems to have a belief that he has a divine right to power. Ever since the last election, he has looked at ways to destabilise parliament and to be destructive to Australia's wellbeing (the biggest scaremonger in history, all false claims). In many ways, he shows signs of having the traits of a dictator.

In a sign of what is to happen under an Abbott led Liberal Government (using similar policies to Campbell Newman) unemployment in Queensland has dramatically increased from 5.3% to 6.3% over the past three months. This is despite Queensland being in the middle of a resources boom at the moment.

Yes, Tony Abbott has made it public that he will run very similar policies to Campbell Newman.
The fact that one of the two state economies that should be enjoying healthy growth experienced a 22% increase in their unemployment rate in three months is proof enough that it would be destructive to the Australian economy.

Sorry BP2, Unemployment is increasing in Australia including Queensland due to Federal Government Policies. The layoffs that Newman has made in the Public Service are nothing like 1.2% of the Qld workforce. Unemployment is going up in Qld largely because companies are laying off staff just like in every other state in Australia and tourism is dropping as people across Australia struggle to be able to afford it in the rising cost of living under Julia Gillard.

I know that you never like facts to get in the way of a good story, Sojourner, but lets look at the facts as according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics:

http://www.ausstats.abs.gov.au/ausstats ... 202012.pdf

New South Wales: Unemployment steady at 5.2% since July.
Victoria: Unemployment down from 5.9% in March to 5.6% in September.
South Australia: Unemployment down from 6.4% in June to 5.6% in September.
Western Australia: Unemployment down from 4.1% in January to 4.0% in September.
Tasmania: Unemployment down from 8.1% in April to 7.3% in September.
Northern Territory: Unemployment down from 4.0% in June to 3.9% in September.
ACT: Unemployment up slightly from 3.6% in June to 3.8% in September.
Queensland: Unemployment up from 5.3% in June to 6.3% in September.

Would you kindly like to restate your earlier comment?? It would appear that the ONLY state experiencing rising unemployment is Queensland, would it not??
Now do you think that may just have a wee bit to do with Campbell Newman???? ;)

You have to remember that it is not just the public servants there who have lost their jobs. The loss of their income has meant that they have less to spend, giving less income to other businesses, resulting in further losses of jobs. These people then also have reduced incomes, leading to less spending, more unemployment..... less spending, even more unemployment, and so the vicious cycle of Campbell Newman's Liberal policy goes on and on and on....

The previous government here was massively irresponsible and incompetent in putting Qld in a difficult financial position.
They eventually "came clean" and decided on asset sales to try and recover the sinking ship.
Went down like a lead balloon with the party faithfull.
Now the LNP are having to make unpopular decisions to clean up the mess that the idiots in the ALP gave the state.

You can try and use it for all the propaganda and point scoring you like, but I doubt you really understand what you are talking about.

Interceptor, all I have done is state a very basic Economics lesson, one that every Year 11 student should be well aware of. Thanks for the insult too, I do just have a weeeeee background in Economics ;)
As for the 'irresponsible management', a lot of the spending was required to help steer Queensland through the Global Financial Crisis. Thankfully, Queensland (and Australia) got through it pretty well, compared to most other western countries.
I know that it resulted in deficit budgets and an increase in overall debts, but there are better ways of decreasing the debt and giving the economy a 'soft landing' than what Campbell Newman has done. Many would say that he has already proven to be more irresponsible and incompetent in a matter of months than the previous government was in its entirety.

Cheers
