Barrie Robran would disagree with you, he actually rates Cornsey as in the best 5 players he's ever seen play SANFL.

He (G Cornes) is not even the best player in his own family :P

There was a series of G.Cornes highlights shown at half time on Friday Night Footy and I didn't realise it was him until I looked up from the computer during the last one. :(

Had the pleasure of meeting Turbs last night at the club, nice bloke, definately dicky knees though came for a drink with Alby who quite often graces us with his presence.. I think were very close to renaming PNUFC to the NPPA (Norwood Past Players Association)
Don't play games with a girl who can play 'em better...

I can only tell you that he played 35 matches between 1966 and 1970.

From memory:

I think Ron Kneebone won the Magarey Medal the year he played Full Back, instead of his usual CHB.
As a Norwood CHB Peter Aish would rate consideration among the greats.
"Bill" Wedding was the best ruckman in Australia at the time and the stand-out Norwood player.
A guy named Bob Kite carried the Norwood team in the mid-1950s. [They were not good then.]
Eric Butler of that era wasn't a bad centreman until the Port guys broke his leg.
John Lill was not a bad CHF, but saved his hands for his cricket career.
Haydn Bunton Jnr was very young when he coached Norwood and played, and was involved in painting the roundabout on the Black Diamond corner at Pt Adelaide Red & Blue after a Norwood victory.
John Hillman absolutely caned John Cahill at centre in one particular match.

Neil Balme played a few games for Norwood while coach, but was past his best by then.
Craig Balme was of more service to Norwood as a Ruckman and as FB.
Danny Jenkins also played wing very effectively.

The worst ever Norwood player - Morrie Pope - recruited by Alan Killagrew when he was coach.
Killagrew also brought with him from St Kilda one Lester Ross, who was good..
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

A really good player who gave it up for his career - Rick Abbott - now running his own Pathology company I believe. He only played one season for Norwood I believe.

I had a chat with Wally Miller about the best Norwood player he had seen. We both agreed that Phil Carman was the most gifted player at Norwood, but on a performance basis Michael Aish is the best.

Rick Abbott actually debuted in the last minor round of 1965 and played in the losing 1st Semi Final the following week. He added 13 games in 1966 for a total of 15 games (4 goals).

I didn't see Morrie Pope play because it was before my time, but I believe he was 6'7" tall and was recruited from Carlton where he played 7 games and kicked 2 goals. He didn't last long at Norwood, playing only 4 games for 1 goal in the number 1 jumper. Just about everyone got a game at Norwood in 1959 :)

David Shillabeer played 35 games and kicked 47 goals from 1966 to 1970. He was skillful half forward who kicked 6 goals in his first full league game (he spent his first 2 on the bench) but suffered a lot of injuries and ended up playing mailny seconds footy. His best return was 15 games for 26 goals in 1968.

Do you have State game comparison? I don't reckon Roger got a guernsey.

You're spot on, he didn't get one.
Graham represented SA 11 times, Sewer 12.

So there you go. Woodcock was a soft, one-sided, hungry hungry hippo who couldn't be trusted to face the Vics.

I just wanted to respond to this misconception that Roger Woodcock was a one-sided player. The truth is he had skills both sides but was able to maneuver to his left so successfully that he was rarely forced to go onto his right side .. a little like Buddy Franklin at the Hawks who reminds me so much of Woodcock when he runs across (and slightly away from) goal and then curls the ball back over his right shoulder for a goal. All class.

Craig Cock tells the story when he had this "Woodcock only turns onto his left foot" notion rammed down his throat so much that he would over-compensate, causing Woodcock to bend back onto his right foot. He kicked 5 goals that day, 3 of them with his right foot.

There is this other notion that Woodcock was soft and never won a hard ball. Once again, that's a fallacy. Once again, his role wasn't to win the hard ball, it was to receive and turn the ball to Norwood's advantage. He took many hard blows over the years only to get back up and keep playing. There's no such thing as a soft league footballer.

Woodcock? What I wouldn't give to have a 25 year old Woodcock runnning around at Norwood in 2008. :)
