IMHO apart from bragging rights its serves none what so ever and why schools continue to hold kids to ransom is ridiculous.
It's fun to play with school mates. Play with guys who you wont play with at club level. I enjoyed representing my school while I was studying, but have never played for the Old Scholars side and have no intention to.
You can play with mates at club level as well, so I still fail to see what purpose it serves.
I think you are missing the point.
EG. at St Michaels where I went to school and played school footy, I got the oppurtunity to play with players from Henley, SMOSH, Seaton, Flinders, Pt Districts, and every other team in the Metro West.
Some of these blokes I had been playing against since I was 6-7yrs old. They were now my friends cause I went to school with them so its a great oppurtunity to play footy with them. Because otherwise I would never would have had the chance to play with them.
On heaters point
Yes a big bit of it is bragging rights but college football is of a very high quality. I think the top few sides of the comp. PAC, St Peters, Sacred Heart, St Micks would give most SANFL under 18 sides a run for there money if not beat some of them.
