How are your numbers mate as I heard you guys were struggling as well - did you get any of the Salisbury North/Ingle Farm kids to come out
We had one Salisbury North kid out this week. We'll be fine, we have 29 under 16s so a few of the more capable lads in that side will rotate through the 18s to make sure we have a full side each week if short.

Hey Choccies, did you get enough U18's at golden grove, its tough keeping them keen at this age.

As far as I know this is correct. Been a real struggle for numbers. Was gonna fold two weeks ago but gave it one more try. Been starting with 16 most weeks and some games even finishing with 13, hence the scores and the decision to drop the side. Some of the lads have put their hand up for senior football but I'm sure some will go to other clubs which is always the bad thing when this happens.

Not good for your club or the league, we gone from 30 teams a couple of years a go to 20. Someone to needs to look at it for the future of the game.

When is the best time to play the 18's in the SAAFL? Saturday or Sunday?

It would have to be Sunday's... A lot of U18's still go to school, and have to play school footy on Saturday's.

A lot of these kids are also playing senior footy now on saturdays, so sundays would be the best option still.

That could be the problem, i agree at 17 or 18 they should be playing senior football. Maybe we should go back to under 17 comp on sunday's?

Is actually getting a real problem, alot of these kids are playing 3 or 4 games of footy over the weekend, personally i think if it continues alot will burn out ,

have seen some play games for the school, pack up go and play Div 1 or Div 1 R and then front up sunday for U18's

If Clubs are asking/expecting U/18's to front up for Div 1 (or 2) or Reserves after school football, then playing Sunday u/18's - I think the clubs need to take responsibility here.

What purpose does school football serve?

IMHO apart from bragging rights its serves none what so ever and why schools continue to hold kids to ransom is ridiculous.

It's fun to play with school mates. Play with guys who you wont play with at club level. I enjoyed representing my school while I was studying, but have never played for the Old Scholars side and have no intention to.

We used to Play Tuesday afternoons and the coaches used to take it easy on the Guys who played during the week but back then there was no Crows/Power not many people worked Saturday afternoons. So there were more players playing. Now it is just the opposite thus clubs are struggling to fill numbers in all grades and yes there are too many clubs in the SAAFL. Some should not be in existence they are only taking players from other clubs to survive. Trust me this does happen!!!!

You can play with mates at club level as well, so I still fail to see what purpose it serves.

I think you are missing the point.
EG. at St Michaels where I went to school and played school footy, I got the oppurtunity to play with players from Henley, SMOSH, Seaton, Flinders, Pt Districts, and every other team in the Metro West.
Some of these blokes I had been playing against since I was 6-7yrs old. They were now my friends cause I went to school with them so its a great oppurtunity to play footy with them. Because otherwise I would never would have had the chance to play with them.

On heaters point
Yes a big bit of it is bragging rights but college football is of a very high quality. I think the top few sides of the comp. PAC, St Peters, Sacred Heart, St Micks would give most SANFL under 18 sides a run for there money if not beat some of them.

We are borderline mate. Had about 16 last weekend I believe so we topped up with underage lads. The problem is that a number of these boys are good enough for at least B grade football, some trialled in teh A's in pre-season but whilst the 18's are touch and go we can't afford to have them playing seniors. It's a real concern because in my opinion they are ready to go at senior level in both size, skill and development.
I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.

I think if we went back to an U16/17's comp would prob fix kids playing 2 or 3 games per week, older kids would be senior players, Just my thoughts.

I dont think the players get much out of school footy, i know the boys that have just graduated from St Micks last year, would rather not have to have played school footy and would rather just play SANFL footy. I would think some of the school sides would beat the bottom two or three U18 SANFL teams, but wouldnt get close to the better sides.
