Well upon reflection I agree those other factors are in play...

Definatly if the big money was there teams would seriously consider it.

Comps like the champions league in europe are run by their founding/governing bodies so there will be an element of prestige to them.

Comps like world series cricket created by rich businessmen/companies/t.v stations need to award huge amount of prize money to get teams/players interested

Champions league soccer is totally different to the foxtel cup. The winner of the champions league gets to claim to be the greatest club in europe and therefore possibly the world. Foxtel cup winners get to say they're the 19th greatest club in the country. Also, it's easier to juggle the two competitions in soccer. Partly because it's not the same contact sport so injuries and soreness are less but also there are a great many games where Man United would win easily with their second best side. The SANFL isn't a competition where you could leave out half your best side and still win easily enough most of the time.

In the end, whatever prizemoney is on offer, the clubs have to spend it somewhere. They can't (within the rules) spend it on players and there are only so many buildings you can put up before you're simply wasting money. You wouldn't dare rip out the pokies to rely on winning a foxtel cup for income and without shareholders or an owner to give the money to it'll just sit in a bank account making for a nice looking annual statement.

My point more is one is run and organised by its governing body, while the other is financed and backed nearly 100% by a t.v company.

BIG DIFFERENCE!

Crap missed it. It wasn't listed in the foxtel magazine but other games are really annoyed I missed it.

Obviously... but there are some of us who are interested.

In the end if the $$$ were right, Centrals and others would be in it. It's nothing to do with workload, commitment to the SANFL premiership and all that crap, $$$ would bring the teams in, they just can't be bothered for the money on offer.

All SANFL, VFL & WAFL sides used to play mid week in the late 70's and thru to the mid 80's in a night competition no body complained except John Todd.

Some clubs need to harden up a bit it didn't hurt Claremont last season they won the WAFL flag quite easy in the end. They are one club who take it very seriously especially when they were sent to the QLD to take on one of the top VFL sides the Northern Bullants to took them lightly and paid the price.

It was a weird time for the game yesterday, it clashed with the GWS/Bullies game and wasnt even on Fox Footy Channel, I though the idea for the comp was to fill gaps. Also was not before an AFL game.

Would be good if they put these games on a Monday night, would get great exposure for Fox Footy and the local leagues.

Im not slagging the comp
But I didnt even know the WA game was on until I saw the scores in the paper the next day
This comp is either poorly advertised or I'm not very observant

West has just proven once again that the ROXTEL Cup is a joke and should be treated as such, it's well known that Port was forced to play by the AFL as it's one club now and is relying on AFL money to get by, but why even sign up in the first place if your West?

The news snippet, showed about four or five people did in the outer, not sure about grandstand side.

There must have been about 175 grand stand side.
This must be one of the smallest crowds ever, for league teams playing in a competition for a prize. Claremont supporters must be embracing it also.
Claremont 3.1 5.4 11.6 20.10 (130)
West Adelaide 2.0 3.2 4.4 4.5 (29)
GOALS - Tigers: Bradshaw 4, McGovern 3, Neates 2, Hamp 2, Richardson 2, Foster, Gilligan, Lee, Handley, Gillespie, Weedon, McGinnity. Bloods: Homburg, Silverlock, Still, Middleton.
BEST - Tigers: Bradshaw, McGovern, Murphy, Foster, Suban, Hamp. Bloods: Bonney, Homburg, Slattery, Laird.
Umpires: R Shelton, B Wardman, D O'Neill.
Crowd: About 180 at Patersons Stadium.

why bother going in it if you are going to rest all your best players. Blight on th SANFL, if the 3 best teams don't want to play in don't let 3 lessor teams take their spot. Tell foxtell to get stuffed.

This is exactly why I didn't want Centrals involved. Pick whether to get smashed or compromise premiership points.

I don't think these are mutually exclusive. For example, Claremont were WAFL premiers and Foxtel Cup runners-up last year. It is a gross oversimplification to say that if you play a full-strength side, you'll not do well in the SANFL.

The competitons 2011 winner, Williamstown, were also runner up in the VFL to the dominant Port Melbourne side.

Watch them turn that around.
