Nathan Bock betting scandal

Talk on the national game

Ok, some good points made above about keeping those types of markets “public”.

I still think a 2 week ban is laughable though. Slap on the wrist and move on.

Where is the outrage at such a lenient suspension? Some posters on here wanted Heath Shaw hung, drawn and quartered.

Slight difference though, Shaw actually placed bets whereas Bock, only passed on information that at the time he thought was harmless. But in hindsight it wasn't harmless at all....

2 weeks is laughable .. Why don't the AFL just have set penalties for such instances to form some sort of consistency?

Easy answer is to get rid of stupid bet types like first goal kicker. If the betting agencies want to put up a market for these types of bets they do so at their own risk. The chances are they will get burnt from time to time.

Feel a bit sorry for the player in this instance, assuming it was all said “innocently” as claimed.

Quite amazing to think, after all of the education process with the Shaw case, that is has happened again.

The quoted payouts suggest two bets of $200 and $400.

Yes but all up there are reports of $40,000 being wagered on it.
Stupid man. After all the drama around Shaw and Maxwell i reckon he should have got 10 weeks for stupidity

i thought it was 40k won on it, if so that is only the above bets at high odds, which would still explain the drop in odds pretty easily, the bookies would very quickly realise someone knew something they didnt.

i also agree that it is unfortunate that the players cant talk about their upcoming game anymore. i understand why but it is unfortunate.

i can easily see the situation where a player tells a mate that he is excited about the upcoming game on the weekend cos he is starting in a different position to normal. how many times has it happened, and the mate hasnt put a bet on? i would think all the time, but obvously sometimes the mate takes advantage of the info and places a bet, this time it happened to win.

Nope. $40,000 won on it. So, at $101 ( or less as the betting changed ) it may have been only $100-200 placed.

if the bookies didnt offer such a variety of options with first goalscorer, first scoring play, most disposals etc then there wouldnt be these issues

If my son played AFL footy,

I would put $50 on him to kick the first goal every week.

Without his knowledge. :D

Would that make me a "Betting Scandal"...?
Smile :)

It's only Money $$$ :)

Seriously Nathan...

When Goodwin got fined a ridiculous amount of money, you would have thought it would serve as a message.

But then Heath Shaw did a naughty thing.
Did he get 10 games or something silly????

If any AFL player honestly thought it was worth it to have a little flutter, or to let that innocuous piece of information out, then the recent example made of Heath Shaw put them all on notice...

But little Nathan, oh Nathan, you screaming idiot!!!
Should have absolutely thrown the book at him!!!

Teams will never abide by it and will take the fine if they think a certain line up will make a difference on game day if the opposition is not aware of it

If you make the fine too big then the AFL will get bogged down in fine appeals as teams use every excuse in the book as to why they had to change the line up. The thing is some of their excuses will be actually valid reasons such as a late withdrawal because of injury.

He didn't have a bet, he didn't tell anyone to. He simply told a family member his might start up forward. As soon as he kicked the goal, he had a bad feeling and told officials of the comments he had made to his family member over the phone within 15 minutes of the final siren.

Different to Shaw, completely. Different to Goodwin, absolutely.
