Abbott's plan 'won't stop warming'

NO amount of tree planting or using biofuels in cars will stop the planet warming, the first report by the Climate Commission warns.

The findings are a blow to Opposition Leader Tony Abbott, who opposes the Government's carbon tax and has instead proposed to combat global warming through an offsets policy.

The report, which pulled together the latest peer-reviewed science on climate change, concluded that the controversial science behind climate change was beyond denial.

"The atmosphere is warming, the ocean is warming, ice is being lost from glaciers and ice caps and sea levels are rising," it said.

"Global surface temperature is rising fast; the last decade was the hottest on record. Human activities - the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation - are triggering the changes we are witnessing in the global climate."

Meanwhile this disturbing news has come to light. What a disgrace. :^o [-x

Liquor store blames carbon tax for beer carton price hike

A LIQUOR store has been caught trying to blame the carbon tax for a 20 per cent rise in beer prices.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims has warned businesses they must be able to substantiate their claims.

The retailer told a customer the tax was responsible for a $10 increase in the price of a carton of beer. Mr Sims said that was a silly claim and the store, which he did not name, was sent a written warning.

"A consumer went into a liquor store and saw a carton of beer for $60 which is normally priced at $49.95," Mr Sims said.

"And when the customer questioned the checkout operator, the customer was told the price increase was due to the carbon tax."

He said his team, dubbed "carbon cops", was on the beat watching for misleading claims.

Businesses can be fined up to $1.1 million.

And a carbon tax will? Or more to the point Australia's carbon tax will have how much effect on the climate?

MM if you seriously believe or expect that any country can singlehandedly "solve" the global climate change problem you are sadly mistaken.

Every country has to do it's fair share towards solving the problem and Australia, as one of the worlds most intense polluters, must do it's fair share too.

Australia doesn't even rate in the top 10 polluters who account for over 70%

The "per capita" argument is continually trotted out but is a load of tripe - grasping at any statistical distortion to support an argument. FFS, look who's in the Top 10  The Falklands & Aruba should be turned back into national parks!!!!

Here is a list of carbon dioxide emissions 1990 to 2008.

I'm rolling around on the floor p!ssing myself after reading that link. China, USA and European Union account for 56% and we p!ssant li'l ole Australia rates 1.32% FFS!
Oh yeah bring on a carbon tax. Lets put on our corduroy trousers, orange bandana's, batik blouses and sandals and march on Parliament house sprinkling organic meusli around to the tune of Peter, Paul and Mary while we hand cash to Bob and Julia's Green/Labor spin doctors and pray that the climate will stop changing.
God help us....

At least we know China, USA , India, Russia ,Iran , Mexico, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa will all be doing their bit to reduce emissions, seeing as though they contribute over half. ;-)

China's emissions are likely to increase as more companies simply outsource them the processes that pollute the environment!

I'm not a climate change sceptic - it is happening.
However, while I agree we are contributing to the CO2 elevation I am aware we are also, now, at a natural peak in the Milankovitch Cycles.
I definitely don't think what we are doing will make any difference, nor would it even if we were a significant part of the total output.

If we had the capacity to have Nuclear Power as France does, I suspect we too could make an actual difference to Global Warming. Simply adding taxes will not reduce the output it will simply be off shored.

Thankfully that's all over, won't even be an issue come election time.

Really G! Don't you think the Libs will make it a big issue - even a referendum as they are threatening to do? It is an advertising agents dream brief. Believe me!

Nup, it comes in mid-2012 next election isn't until late 2013. They might try and run it as a side issue but won't get any traction given everyone will be saying to themselves they're now better off financially and doing our bit to help the environment.

If the election was in late 2012 maybe but not almost a year and a half after it's come in.
