Liquor store blames carbon tax for beer carton price hike

A LIQUOR store has been caught trying to blame the carbon tax for a 20 per cent rise in beer prices.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairman Rod Sims has warned businesses they must be able to substantiate their claims.

The retailer told a customer the tax was responsible for a $10 increase in the price of a carton of beer. Mr Sims said that was a silly claim and the store, which he did not name, was sent a written warning.

"A consumer went into a liquor store and saw a carton of beer for $60 which is normally priced at $49.95," Mr Sims said.

"And when the customer questioned the checkout operator, the customer was told the price increase was due to the carbon tax."

He said his team, dubbed "carbon cops", was on the beat watching for misleading claims.

Businesses can be fined up to $1.1 million.

Every country has to do it's fair share towards solving the problem and Australia, as one of the worlds most intense polluters, must do it's fair share too.

Oh yeah bring on a carbon tax. At least we know China, USA , India, Russia ,Iran , Mexico, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa will all be doing their bit to reduce emissions, seeing as though they contribute over half. ;-)

However, while I agree we are contributing to the CO2 elevation I am aware we are also, now, at a natural peak in the Milankovitch Cycles.
I definitely don't think what we are doing will make any difference, nor would it even if we were a significant part of the total output.

If we had the capacity to have Nuclear Power as France does, I suspect we too could make an actual difference to Global Warming. Simply adding taxes will not reduce the output it will simply be off shored.

Nup, it comes in mid-2012 next election isn't until late 2013. They might try and run it as a side issue but won't get any traction given everyone will be saying to themselves they're now better off financially and doing our bit to help the environment.

If the election was in late 2012 maybe but not almost a year and a half after it's come in.
