If a poll was done asking which was better: Beds are Burning or Guy Sebastian's latest effort (which, I am happy to say, I know nothing about personally), which would win hands down? Popularity don't necesessarily mean better.
Out of Sound of Then and Beds are Burning, which do you think is earning the most $ in royalties these days? I honestly don't know the answer, but given the fact that Sounds of Then has been flogged to death in various advertising campaigns, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the winner. I think THAT is standing the test of time!
PhilG wrote:I did a top 100 for myself. Beds are Burning was number 1. Sounds of Then was never considered. Why? Because until this thread - I'd never heard of it. And neither would most Australians.
I reckon most Aussies would have watched channel 9 at some time in their lives Phil. In which case they'd be intimately familiar with the tune. Your own ignorance of the song does not mean that the rest of the country is not familiar with it.
But if you really were ignorant, then I guess this was a big fat porky:

So which are you Phil? Ignorant or a liar?
My personal opinion: Beds are Burning is at best an average song. I'm with Punky; I could roll off several Oils tunes which are far superior, IMO. US Forces, Power and the Passion, Kosciusko, Hercules... Great, gritty, hard Aussie rock music. Midnight Oil jumped the shark some time after the release of Species Deceases. Their music was not bad, but never recaptured the same edge as 10...1 or Red Sails In The Sunset.
