Really? If a poll was done and the general population was asked which song was better - Beds are Burning would win hands down. I think THAT is standing the test of time!
or maybe I just don't think Beds Are Burning was the greatest song ever played on Oz radio?
I like Power & the Passion a million times more than BAB.

Would've loved to have been a fly on the wall for that debate.... lol!

I bow before you, the doyen of the music industry, Phil G.... Any other songs you haven't heard that I should throw out in the trash?
I'd have an empty cd collection methinks...

Very interesting.... 4 pages of posts and not a single song I can recall ever having heard. Obviously I am well outside the mainstream of the dominant culture here.

If a poll was done asking which was better: Beds are Burning or Guy Sebastian's latest effort (which, I am happy to say, I know nothing about personally), which would win hands down? Popularity don't necesessarily mean better.

Out of Sound of Then and Beds are Burning, which do you think is earning the most $ in royalties these days? I honestly don't know the answer, but given the fact that Sounds of Then has been flogged to death in various advertising campaigns, I wouldn't be surprised if it was the winner. I think THAT is standing the test of time!

I reckon most Aussies would have watched channel 9 at some time in their lives Phil. In which case they'd be intimately familiar with the tune. Your own ignorance of the song does not mean that the rest of the country is not familiar with it.

But if you really were ignorant, then I guess this was a big fat porky:

So which are you Phil? Ignorant or a liar?

My personal opinion: Beds are Burning is at best an average song. I'm with Punky; I could roll off several Oils tunes which are far superior, IMO. US Forces, Power and the Passion, Kosciusko, Hercules... Great, gritty, hard Aussie rock music. Midnight Oil jumped the shark some time after the release of Species Deceases. Their music was not bad, but never recaptured the same edge as 10...1 or Red Sails In The Sunset.

I think Forgotten Years and King of the Mountain are worthy of a mention. Two of my favourite Midnight Oil songs are on the Beds are Burning LP, Wara Kaurna and Sometimes. My opinion only though. Gotta agree Hercules and US Forces put Beds are Burning to shame....

Given that most commercial radio stations throughout the country pitched at the 25-45 yo demographic have an 80s hour every day or play at least 20 80s songs a day it is a fair chance that Sounds of Then is played at least once a week in every mainland capital city.

Christ Mix FM play it Horsham regularly....

In fact I bet you have a greater chance of hearing Gangajang each week compared those great iconic Australian 80s acts such as Wa Wa Nee, Kids in the Kitchen, Big Pig, or the Uncanny X men
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Big Pig's "Breakaway" was a great song.

Neither, and I want an apology for that piece of defamation. I repeat, I DO NOT know "Sounds of Then" - certainly by name. I know a couple of other GANGgajang songs (can't remember the names off the top of my head but none of them were Sounds of Then - oh apart from "This is Australia" which isn't bad but not as good as BAB).
ROFLMAO!
Sounds of Then is the "This is Australia" song!

BTW & FWIW - Sounds of Then rocks, as does their other big song Solid Rock (I have the album and enjoy it).

BWAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!

Calm down fella - I admit, I was going the needle with that line - but really it wasn't clear from your previous posts whether or not you know the band or the song. In one post you say "Who?", in a subsequent post you proclaim familiarity with the band, in a subsequent post you claim not to know the song again.

It seems from your text above that the winner is ignorance: "This is Australia" is in fact "Sounds of Then". On one of the interviews on the previously-mentioned DVD, the author of the song laments his choice of the name, since this has probably cost him untold royalties through lost sales over the years.

I accept that you rate BAB better than SOT. Now you know which song you are talking about you are qualified to offer your opinion. That was always my point.

Hard to apologise for any defamation, since there was none, but I heartily apologise for causing you any upset.

Oh dear.... Suggest you do a little research on who sang "Solid Rock" DW, or else I'll have to call you ignorant
