Just wondering if anyone out there has had a cortizone injection or any other sort of jab in a muscle strain? I understand it gets used for tendonitis and other things, but not sure how it works in a muscle strain?

Not sure how many docs are keen on dishing them out to amateur sportsmen though. Even at SANFL level they often steer clear of them.

Cortisone reduces inflammation fairly quickly.
However, its longer term effects on glucose and fat metabolism, weakening tendons, and thinning bones indicates a certain caution about its use.

Sportsmed are usually fairly willing and have always done me when I've asked for it, although the jabs were for numbing broken bones rather than taking care of muscle strains.

I had one in my back to reduce inflammation in my lower back in 2008, possibly caused by a buldging disc causing spasms.

Fast forward 3 years and i have the makings of stress fractures in my lower spine, which explains psyber's theory of thinning of the bones.

My advice is really look into long term effects with your specialist prior to getting one.

Had a jab deep into my left ancle quite a few years back.

1st had a pain killer.

Didn't work.

The only thing that works is your will power to go.

Everyone is in pain. Just don't let your opposition know.

Let them think you have the body of an 18 year old.

Side-effects: Oral use of cortisone has a number of potential side-effects: hyperglycemia, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, anxiety, depression, amenorrhoea, cataracts and glaucoma, among other problems

Not just oral use though - the medical literature supports the idea that these effects occur whatever way it gets into the system.
Osteoporosis is the thinning of bones.
The effects are dose related, and can be accumulative, but some people are more sensitive to it than others.

[Personally I'd avoid it like the plague, and also avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Nurofen or Voltaren.]
