Port need to get their coaching infrastructure sorted for next season. They lack coaches, assistants and analysts for each line and are way behind the rest of the competition in this regard.

Personally feel that a big part of the problem has been their drafting, which was a positive in the early years. Between and including the 2001 to 2007 drafts (not including the rookie draft) they don't have a lot to show for it.

Feel that two of those picks in Nick Lower and Stephen Gilham are good AFL footballers but at the time they obviously didn't fit in with Williams plans.

I was having a gander at AFL 360 last night, and have to agree with what (I think) Mark MacLure said about Primus. As hard as he has tried with a shit list, he still had opportunities to notch up a few wins with some of his decision-making, but he has c0cked just about every one of them up in a big way, least of all his handling of the Cornes boys this year. :? The lack of honesty & frankness (Laidley aside.. ) when discussing the issues in the media have done more harm than good, allowing speculation in the industry to run rife. In addition, by being 'economical with the truth', Primus has also alienated supporters in the process - which we really can't afford to have happen. There's a real possibility that the Cornes lads are a big part of the problem, but that is not the public perception to the average outsider. People in general don't appreciate having the wool pulled over their eyes and fed a pile of bullshit, and this is no different.

I think the lack of transparency is hurting the Club. The supporters don't need to know every single detail, but don't shut them out completely. Once it's out there, it's done & dusted, people accept it for what it is, and they move on. News doesn't stay current in AFL world too long these days. Laidley was very, very open about issues within the Club 4-5wks ago on Fox, and personally, I actually felt affiliated for the first time in a long time. None of this smoke'n mirrors crap or scripted statements that go around in circles and mean nothing. One of the strengths of the PAFC for so long has been the supporter base. Why? Because the supporters felt PART of the Club!! ;) I don't think the same can be said now. :(

In the end, MacLure finished up by saying that Primus needs to be replaced with someone who can take control of the Club. Primus will get another year at least. But his nuts will be in a vice from the time pre-season training kicks off (about elimination final time... ). He'd better learn from his mistakes, otherwise his tenure next year will be a short one.

Yeah that was his achilles heel in the 18's championships. If he is getting shots at goal thats all im concerned about, means he is getting the ball in his hands. Im hoping he can fill the massive hole left by tredders, bloody long way to go though until he gets to that level, however the kid shows promise and its more than i can say for 2/3 of our side.

Interesting that Butcher was reported on 5AA to have put off all contract negotiations to the end of the season and would not sign with Port when offered this season. My recollection was that he was taken with a first round pick, he would be one of the last players they would want to lose to a rival club, yet no doubt several clubs will be courting his manager one might think! Still Port now have the coin to raise their offer so likely its their call if they keep him or not.

Meanwhile Shaun Burgoyne is doing well in the happy team at Hawthorn. As are ex Power players Brent Guerra and (to a lesser extent) Stephen Gilham...

Guerra is also an ex St Kilda player as well. His move from Port had as much to do with off field factors as it was on field.

Triple Premiership player with Centrals too. 8)

Stewie Dew also springs to mind as an ex Power (and Centrals) player who did well moving to Hawthorn.

Poorly run in the last 5 years but certainly not the most poorly run in the last 20 years. Clubs like the Bulldogs, Melbourne and St Kilda haven't won a flag in over 40 years and would would love playing in 2 grand finals in 4 years (admittedly 2007 had a negative impact for Port long term).

Port are likely to win the spoon, but Carlton "won" multiple spoons after being caught cheating, so I'd say that was fairly bad management of a club. Fairly handy to have those priority/number 1 picks though, a luxury that Port has never been fortunate enough to receive, indeed Port has never had the luxury of early picks that clubs like St Kilda, Carlton etc have had. Some people have poor memories if they overlooked Carlton efforts earlier this decade. Trading for Stephen O'Reilly, who then ultimately informed the AFL of some illegal payments, thats some fairly poor management there I would say.

The same things could be said from the other perspective re playing in grand finals - Nick Stevens missing out on a flag after moving to Carlton for the 2004 season; Josh Mahoney would never have played in a flag if he didn't move to Port.

Port is now paying for their relative success 7 or 8 years ago, which has been exacerbated by some poor drafting and list management decisions. If a club doesn't have some early picks, then it has to draft extremely well and thats where Port has been let down.

Indeed. Carlton were a ******* rabble. A complete joke of a club from 2002 until 2007. The darkest time in the clubs history.
Yes we did have the picks etc, but what turned Carlton around just as much as the picks was sourcing the money & sponsors to get the football department and training facilities up with the best in the AFL. Carlton has 2 of the richest sponsorship deals in the AFL with Hyundai & Mars, and we have our debts (while still high), coverable, and a clear pathway to clear them.

That is just as much as a problem for Port. They can't attract the dollars. Unless a club can get the coin in, they can't have a football department like Geelong / Collingwood / Essendon / West Coast etc etc. Success of a club stems so much from those areas now too...

No money = no show.
