Some people act like tossers, not realising or caring about how serious airline security is.
I went through the metal detector the other week, with four A4 sheets of paper, and my packet of smokes (literally no other possessions), and they stopped me to have an explosives test...
Would have been a perfect opportunity to say "yeah, I rolled a bomb up in a cigarette paper", but I probably would have been mobbed if I had...
Or how it's an airline's fault that air traffic control's systems are down.
Explosives tests are completely at random. Half the time I've been pulled up I'm not even flying!
There are some simple rules when at an airport people should follow:
1. Get there in plenty of time. Don't wing it at the last minute, then expect the airline to sympathise with you because you don't have any time management skills.
2. If you must drink, do it responsibly.
3. Treat staff the way you want to be treated. Use manners, thank them for their service. They don't want to give you a hard time, many work long hours and the last thing they want is a patron giving them grief over a petty issue.
4. Don't joke about security. Airport security are strict for a reason (though a few I've encountered do have a good sense of humour). Respect it.
5. Watch departure signage like a hawk and listen to any verbal instruction. Sometimes things change, and these are the best ways of finding out - especially when they announce a gate change while you're in the toilet!
