That 2 chances in a day is a flawed argument. How does that teach kids to value their wicket when batting??? All that does is teach them not to give a toss as they will always have the afternoon game to have another shot

You can't teach the other batting techniques Bulls speaks of without putting a price on your wicket.

T20 should be very much a specialist format, for the best of the best.

You cannot learn value for your wicket, or genuine cricket shots, in an innings that lasts 120 balls for the team.

Slogs, reverse sweeps, ramp shots- the only players that play these consistently well, are the best of the best.

Your Warner-type slogger will have sporadic success, but will not dominate consistently (see Shahid Afridi and the amount of Tests he played versus short form).

The skills needed to adapt to this format can only truly be learned by playing the longer forms, as you can build an innings, wait for the right ball to play these ass clown shots to, and once they know them, then they can manipulate the field to make those shots work for them.

Try it in a T20 for the first time, stuff it up, and the games over... And you have to try these shots in that format, because you have to score... Four or five day game, different story...

Nic Maddinson is looked at as a future international. Because of what? It would be his long, impressive first class innings, not a Warner-like slog or two.

Far from it SMAC, I could not disagree more. Irrespective of what we try and teach kids, they want to do well at what they do and they also want to win. A 12 year old should be taught how to build an innings by their coach, irrespective of whether School, Club or Grade level. We want all 12 year olds to have that chance, not just the ones the your High Performance Program think are worthy of being taught the correct way. I shudder when I heard what you said. All underage selectors have been proved wrong numerous times when they try and pidgeon hole players as future High Performance players. Just to name a few players that SACA have got wrong, Haberfield, Cranmer, Brown, Delmont, Moffatt, Harford. I could go on, but rather pointless. I really can't believe you made the above statement.

SMAC, as I understand it now, your role along with the other Development Officers is community cricket and satisfy the KPI's of participation rates. That is what came from the Australian Sports Commission Report and Grade Clubs can only rely on names being passed onto them for their underage squads. Take your 20/20 into school and community cricket where they are probably necessary for participation rates, but leave them out of what the grade clubs bottom line is and that is to develop Australian Test Cricketers. You don't develop test cricketers from letting them play slap and tickle cricket (to quote Reb).

As a skipper of a very young side the last few years, and playing that horrid 20/20 comp last season im glad it got the ass. All the other skippers/players hated it. I had a number of young blokes not powerful enough to bomb balls and/or rotate the strike enough against better bowlers. These kids are techniqually sound yet had to resort to un orthadox strokes to score.... Often resulting in them getting out and feeling as though they have let the side down. Confidence goes and form slumps set in!

The High Performance group has long failed at SACA otherwise there would have been more 'home grown' talent developed and playing for SA as we speak.

Ha! I got my membership renewal in the post this week. Good news is that it is cheaper due to the payments recieved. Also got some promotional crap for this 'new' team, threw it straight in the bin. Certainly won't be going if they want to slug me extra to attend. If true this might cause me to age 40 years instantly and get into letter writing mode!
