it would take a MASSIVE step from both the AFL and the state comp's. one i think that is on the cards and personally i think it could work.
just as an aside. im not saying its the best option just playing the devils advocate somewhat.
They would need to be paid a heap more, because they could be weighing up a 6 week a contract that could also mean giving up a decent day job.
The threats to our league won't ever stop coming, we just need to continue to find ways to best protect our clubs and the standard of football we want to maintain at local level .. Sometimes that will mean we have to roll with the punches I guess, as we have done for the last 30 years.
2/ threat??, maybe... how about looking at it as an opportunity for some bloke who works his guts out to get the chance at the highest level!?
whether you like it or not, the state comps are now (and have been for a while) feeder systems for the AFL. YES every sanfl/vfl/wafl team goes out to get the best guys they can to try and win the flag every year BUT if you asked the player base at this level if they would jump at the chance to play AFL for maybe only a month im guessing you'd get a 95% yes!
Of course they are feeder systems, you don't need to be Einstein to figure that out .. My comment wasn't from the players perspective.
Should situations be establish-able that are to the mutual benefit of player and club/competition alike then that's great and what we should be aiming to achieve, but just as the club is always greater than the individual, the competition must remain greater than all of it if we want to preserve its integrity and longevity.
Im always happy for any of the lads in the state that have busted their nuts to get their due reward at the highest level, but if you think that should be the number 1 priority of our clubs and competition then we won't agree.
As I said, the SANFL has been seriously challenged by a number of issues in the last 30 years, when the player drain really began in earnest, and whilst losing player after player the competition and clubs have done a great of continuing their battle to put out the highest standard of football they can .. They have done well in less than ideal situations and will need to continue to do so is the point Im trying to make.
