Yes the WORLD newspaper sponsored the first baseball championship and the name has stuck

Sorry my friend, myth...Busted. the World Series is named like so many other Americanisms, because they believe they are the centre(should that be center?) of the sporting universe...Originally called the "World Championship Series" and then shortened to just World Series, nothing to do with the World Newspaper. paragraph 2 of the wiki page, with supporting references:) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Series
C'mon you Reds....Adelaide United = its just like watching Brasil!!!

Dutchy posted that it relates to a sponsor, which is confirmed in the paragraph you have referenced. I guess they had every right to claim it as a World Series, as it was only played in America at the time it commenced.

I dont think you read it. The name World Series had nothing to do with a sponsor, that was a myth, probably propagated to pour some water on the impression that we get of Americans thinking they're the centre of the world.

The post-season series between the AL and NL was originally called the "Championship of the World" or "World's Championship Series" (from 1884). The 1890 Spalding Guide expressed an intent to expand the championship to the entire world,[1] following the 1888–89 world tour organized by Albert Spalding, owner of the Chicago White Stockings.[2] Over time, the event's name was shortened to "World's Series" and then "World Series."[1] Contrary to popular legend, the name of the series is not related to the New York World newspaper.[1][3]
It's all the SANFL's fault.

Before the Superbowl was called the Superbowl it was the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. This was in 1966 when the NFL and AFL (not to be confused with our AFL) Champions started playing off in a season ending game. This lasted until about SuperBowl III I think.

Even here in Australia PBL got sucked in to the "world" tag back in the late 70s when Channel 9 started broadcasting cricket. They called their tri-national one day cricket series in Australia the "World Series Cup" which was a throwback to their "World Series Cricket".

Back on topic;

As from next season VFL teams can play all AFL listed players instead of abiding by the 12-10 rule.

This is great for the Victorian AFL teams 8)

And now KG wants to claim Anzac Day for the AFL in Adelaide by playing the Showdown on this day.
Even better the genius has come up with striking a medal for the best player in this match and calling it the Bob Quinn Medal.

Hasn't he heard of the SANFL and the revived tradition of the re-match of the previous years grand finalists being played on ANZAC Day and the best player in the match being awarded the Bob Quinn Medal in honour of the Military Medal winner & Port Magpies legend?

No mention in his article of the SANFL, the match or the already existing Bob Quinn Medal. [-x

How soon they forget. These AFL types need to start remembering where they came from and where they plunder their present players from.

It's one of the great mysteries of SA football that so many people who made their mark in the SANFL turn their backs on it so quickly.

How quick they forget. And KG is a silly old senile bugger who should have been put out to pasture years ago T-MMM and the Advertiser must be desperate to get his over inflated opinion.
He cannot see past the borders of SA to realise that all in Victoria is not bad and that SA is the only state. He was an embarrsement when he appeared on the footy show when trying to bag and sledge victoria and sam newman made us all look like a much of insecure morons just like the westend beer karma advert. totally cringe worthy

Any chance that Roo is KG's ghostwriter? The previous years grand finalists playing as the stand alone game on ANZAC day is a brilliant model and an outstanding tradition. It is a matter of time before the AFL do something similar and will probably claim that it is their idea.

What I find interesting is that South had no AFL players listed in our side and we won the match on Friday night. If push comes to shove, I think that the SANFL would do pretty well if all the AFL listed players were withdrawn from the competition. I also don't think that South are the only side to have discovered that they can win matches over sides with AFL listed players playing for them.

Perhaps it is time for the SANFL clubs to have another look at the current situation, if people within the AFL want to try and strongarm our competition into giving up our Reserves competition and so on, perhaps its time they were reminded who owns their respective clubs and for what purpose they exist - for nothing more than revenue streams to the SANFL. They would be more than welcome IMO to pay us the cost of their AFL licence indexed to 2011 and go compete on their own, replete with their own reserves sides in the VFL if that is the way they want to go. I have a suspicion that the SANFL would do just fine out of that arrangement with the new revenue streams from the investment of the funds and true market rates for the hire of whichever venue we own at the time for match day, training and rental for hosting their club and facilities on our property.
