Howdy all,

Some shots from the trial between South and West a fortnight ago.

Cheers,

Nick

It's great for watching, but without a wide aperture lens I wasn't able to shoot at the normal high shutter speeds I use. But by changing the white balance to shade, slowing down to 1/300 or 1/400 and upping the ISO to around 1200 or 1600 (apologies if incorrect, but I can't remember the exact figures at the moment) they didn't come out too badly after editing in Photoshop (CS4) and using the Shade white balance. From memory they were shot at around F5, F6.3 and F8, as my lens is a Sigma 150-500mm F5-6.3

I'd love to shoot faster shutter speeds and a lower aperture (like F2.8 or lower) to really freeze the action, but unless someone wants to give me $7,000 for a new, wider lens, that's not going to be possible.

The hardest part, by far, was the change from sunlight to darkness, with shadows across the ground etc. Once daylight saving finishes this shouldn't be an issue for night or even twilight games.

F5-F8 and under lights, didnt think that was possible for action shots... good work, there also isn't a great deal of noise either in your shots so your Camera body itself must be pretty good with shooting at 1200-1600

Heard a rumour that Canon are releasing a 300mm 2.8 at around half the price of a 400mm 2.8, will definately be looking at one of these, especially if the Bays ever get night games, my F5 isn't keen on night work

A 300mm F2.8? Might have to bill some clients and make some money for that one! I wanted to experiment with my new Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 but it was on the old 400D body so wasn't keen to try it under lights on the older camera. Anyway, its all fun until somebody goes broke buying new camera toys...
