what about 25 off 8

Out next ball

Fair 7th wicket partnership
85 off 22 balls

Interesting that they didn't cross on that ball, but Mills still gets a four. And another two.

200-300 took 29 balls.

Hhmmm. I guess the fix against Canada didn't work when the Pakis still accidentally won.

So should Ross Taylor get 2 asterixs next to his score. ;)

100 off the last 5 overs. Oram and Taylor are two of the best six hitters going around. Nothing is out of the question when those two are going. Kamral will have some serious questions raised. Even if there's nothing untoward in it, missing two chances standing back in 2 balls isn't good enough from anyone, let alone a specialist keeper!

That 100 off 29 balls gives us an indication of just how good David Hookes' 100 off 34 balls against Vic all those years ago was and that was in a Shield Match.

The crowds that travelled through the hills to watch the first one-day international in Pallekele were first treated to cricket's adaptation of The Comedy of Errors, with Kamran Akmal playing the lead and Shoaib Akhtar in a strong supporting role, and then to a gory massacre. Pakistan were so comically incompetent that they allowed New Zealand, who had to endure the tragic struggle of Jamie How, to build a satisfactory platform from which Ross Taylor launched an assault so brutal that Pakistan were gutted and unable to defend themselves by the end of the innings.

A stronger opponent would have made Pakistan regret the glut of extras and dropped catches much earlier but New Zealand's batsmen did not dominate the bowling until the end. And then they did so in some style. Martin Guptill was their solitary performer in the first half, and Taylor used massive slices luck to get going. But in the last six overs, Taylor broke free in unprecedented manner, taking 28 off a Shoaib over - the tournament's most expensive - before plundering 30 off one from Razzaq. In began to rain sixes and fours scorched the outfield as New Zealand ransacked 114 off the last six overs to reach 302.

New Zealand 302/7 (50 ov)

Pakistan 192 (41.4 ov)

New Zealand won by 110 runs

Tim Southee:"It was the sort of day you are dreaming of, we were thinking of 245 and then suddenly ... it was some of the cleanest hitting I have ever seen. The partnership at the end from Pakistan is slightly disappointing."

New Zealand are now top of table on net run rate. Here's the latest points table.

This match will be remembered for the surreal onslaught at the end of New Zealand's innings, and Kamran Akmal's disastrous effort behind the stumps. Pakistan lost it in the final six over of New Zealand's batting and the first seven of theirs.

Post-match presentation:
Shahid Afridi: "I have no excuse. We didn't bowl well, we didn't field well, you can win games based on fielding, but I am confident of my team and myself, we will not repeat this performance. We should learn from what we did in this game."

Ross Taylor: "To have them six down after 20 overs was a credit for the bowlers. We didn't want to be complacent at the break. I had a bit of luck early on, even when I was at 30 or 40, but the way Nathan and Jake came out and hit it rubbed off. " No update on Vettori. Taylor says "we'll just have to find out over the next couple of days."

Brod, disagree with your thoughts and this is why. In todays cricket, it appears as though the batting efforts of the WK are much more important that the WK. Akmal is not a good keeper, his footwork is terrible, his glovework is ordinary, but he can bat. No coincidence that he was replaced by his brother for the tests in NZ.

Don't know about everyone else, and I admit I haven't watched a lot of the mickey mouse round matches of the world cup, but from what I have seen the WK has been very ordinary. Akmal, Prior are prime examples, both missing chances a grade keeper would take on a bad day. And these are professional cricketers.

Give me the best wicketkeeper first and foremost and then worry about his batting average. Akmals mistakes only cost, lets see, about 130 odd runs and secondly the match.
