Considering Wade will get better with age and Haddin has missed quite a few games with injury throughout his career.
No better time to bring Wade in with some experience still in the Australian side.
Would not like to be the next best keeper after Wade because the only time you will get a game is when he is rested.

That got me thinking about a stat...

How many Tests did Gilly miss during his career?

Did he stand out of a tour at some stage?
For every one I miss I am closer to a hole in one.

None. Healy only missed one; Phil Emery played in that one.

So, in 216 Test matches between November 1988 and January 2008 this is who played in sequence:
64 Ian Healy
1 Phil Emery
55 Ian Healy
96 Adam Gilchrist

Thank you Spelly- I actually had this one correct in my head.

Since him, however, we've had Haddin, Manou, Paine, and why have I got this thought I missed someone...

Need Wade or Paine to step in now, and do what Gilly did (not the batting, but the consistency).

Another keeper from the past that was an excellent batsman was a SA player
Wayne Flipper Phillips
He only kept for part of his career, but it allowed AU the then luxury of having a keeper batter

FIRST CLASS
6907 runs
ave 37-74
made 13 tons as well
He was a glorious batsman to watch

QUESTION
IF we all agree that gilCHRIST was the best ever BATTING keeper in history
Who in the history of the game was the 2nd best BATTING keeper from all Test Nations ?

Used to love watching dujon. Brilliant gloveman with that west indies of the 80's swagger whilst batting. Currently dhoni up there but his glovework not great.

He's my lovechild when it comes to 'keepers...

Averaging mid 30's, he can bat like there's no tomorrow, or stonewall with the best.

As a BATSMAN, Sangakarra, Dhoni, beat him hands down, McCullum and Prior shade him, but as a KEEPER he has no rival.

For much of the time Flipper was playing, an extra batsman wasn't a luxury, it was a necessity.

Stewart = 'keeping hack - he won us test match with his missed stumpings and catches when they preferred him over Jack Russell in the mid 90s. Fence posts do a better job than him.
Boucher - he's a good un, 5th best 'keeper I've seen after Healy, Marsh, Taylor and Russell. Never really saw much of Knott to compare Syed Kirmani wasn't bad either.

Back to the topic of the thread three years ago I thought Hartley was going to be the one to replace Haddin. Hartley has great hands and is a solid batsman. Paine and Wade have leaped frogged him though. I think Wade's hands are as good as his and he bats better. Paine not quite as good as Hartley and Wade (comes up to early and has slightly harder hands) but his batting gets him over the line ATM.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Cornsey, agree with a bit of this. IMO
Healy - best Aussie keeper ever, however Gilchrist first picked in best ever team.
England, Stewart won Aussie many a test with his keeping, Knott best ever from there and perhaps consideration behind Gilchrist as 2nd best keeper / bat.
South Africa - Boucher, cannot believe the posts saying he is a good keeper, couldn't catch a cold IMO, makes far too many mistakes. Theh haven't had a good keeper since their return to test matches.
West Indies - Dujon, have to be in consideration although couldn't really comment on him standing up to stumps.
Current - Sangakarra and Dhoni - both top class batters, I think the casual way Dhoni keeps hides how good he actually is, although he had a couple of shockers v Aus recently.

On the Aussie scene
Manou - was best keeper, past it now, unfortunately, but he has 1 more baggy green than me and a couple more state caps.
Rhonchi - struggling after pushing into Aussie 1 day side, jury is out. Love watching him bat though, he smashes them.
Hartley - makes a few too many simple mistakes for me, good State keeper, not in consideration for further honors.
Haddin - still best bat amongs the keepers and probably the best keeper still.
Wade - sorry don't rate his keeping, but probably in 2 to 3 years will be the incumbent and hopefully he can reach the high standard Gilly set, because this bloke can seriously bat.
Payne - alround solid, probably why he is there now, can bat and good keeper.

Manou is easily the best keeper.

His batting however.

I would say to any young keepers out there in the 14 to 16 year range that the next Aussie keeper after the bloke that replaces Haddin, will come from that current age group. So knuckle down now. The ammount of cricket that is going to be played in the near future the burn out factor will play a huge part. Now throw in the massive dollars that will be on offer from the Indians. Big opportunities coming up for the youngins.
