Managed to see my first game on sunday with Irish Australians v Port District

I didn't expect much from Districts after hearing half the team hadn't played or trained before, but did alright against IA winning by a point i think.
It appears as though IA are seen to be easybeats, so the result probably doesn't mean much.
Mitcham by 10 tonight, especially with the rain, which i think will exacerbate the lesser skill of the lads from PDFC

We played a grand Final at gaelic park about 5 weeks ago. the outer side of the ground was an absolute bog. worst i have seen. this rain and 3 games tonight may leave it a bit of a bog for the sunday games.

On the tipping...
5 posters are on 3 tips :)
6 posters are on 2 tips  Yep im one of them
Just quickly....
ONK DEF WI 2.6 TO 0.4 I WAS TOLD
MITCHAM BY A POINT OVER THE NEW PORT
ST.B BY 8 POINTS OVER I.A COUTESY OF 3 LATE GOALS....4.6 TO 1.7
NA FIANNA OVER FON BY 2 POINTS IN A SEE-SAWING AFFAIR...2.11 TO 3.6. GOOD SKILLFULL GAME PLAYED IN GOOD SPIRITS :D
From what i saw on Sunday(didnt see friday) the standard has improved very much from last year. Both of Sundays games could have gone either way. 8)
The new interchange rule has improved our game in several ways. The key positive being next to NO stoppage time in games. 8)
FINALLY WELL DONE TO BOTH ST.BRENDANS AND IRISH AUSTRALIANS FOR PAYING TRIBUTE TO NORM MURPHY WITH A MINUTES SILENCE BEFORE THE START OF PROCEEDINGS TODAY.... A LITTLE BIT OF HUMILITY AND CLASS FOLLOWED BY A FANTASTIC FOOTBALL CONTEST WHICH WAS THE FIRST EVER GAME I HAVE EVER REFFED WHERE NOT EVEN ONE TICK WAS GIVEN.
Its looking like its going to be a competitive year with all teams a chance to win any game they compete in.

Excellent to hear that the standard, and sportsmanship, is high already. Was there any 15 a side played on the weekend though?

Im not sure on Fridays Mens games but the first Sundays Mens game was 15 a side. The late game was 13 a side. Could have been 15 but both teams had several late arrivals. Round 1 it was hard to know exactly who would show up. This weeks return of Bruno Rocca will allow Na Fianna to play 15 a side in the Mens Comp almost always. With the unlimited interchange and the game having almost no stoppages its easy enough for a team to give the max 21 players a run. Increased numbers is going to be good for the game.
Also good to see probably as many as a dozen new State League players blooded in the NA F v FON contest. Quite a few Irish born in that mix as well.
In the first game i believe Irish Aust had 8 new fellas running around and they gave the cup holders quite a scare when they hit the front with 8 mins to play.

The premiership hangover was in full effect for the Taints yesterday. Altho that is probably disrespectful to I.A who were the better side for most of the game. If they can find a forward to put the ball over the bar consistently then they should get a few wins on the board this year. Certainly will be a lot more competitive.

Can anyone provide a summary of the Onkas / Western Ireland match. That result looks to be the shock of the round.

Great to see the gaelic season back in full swing!

Yes an average display from the Taints yesterday, but as some of the crowd offered after the game "the Taints have now won more games than they usually do before Christmas" so at least thats a bit of a poisitive...

I thought Matt Doecke had a quiet game by his standards yesterday - he probably only had a measly 75+ possessions (and 400 dream team points) whilst continually running off State forward Tony Huebner who had very little interest in chasing Doeckes aka the smiling assasin!

The Taints hope to get Clayton Lush and Linc Rogers back in, and if we get 5 or 6 injuries maybe even ZC will be able to force his way back in for round 2. Good to see the Taints getting some more Polish class into the team, with big Sam Joraslafski playing only his 2nd State league game and probably being best for us yesterday.

This Weeks Tips....

NA FIANNA v PORT...I expect this game to be even all over the park except in the kicking for points. Na Fianna will legitimately have over 2,000 games more experience to call upon. Throw into the mix the return of Bruno Rocca and the sublime form in defence of "Bacon Fingers" Duurland and im tipping FINNS 6-10

MITCHAM v WI....I didnt see either team play but spoke to several people about these teams performances. Cares, Soxy and TommyG are the real dangers for the Goats but alas i feel a sleeping giant will be awoken this friday night. WI GOATS 6-10

MATCH OF THE ROUND
ONKAS v ST.BRENDANS....Could this well be a Hannigan Cup Dress rehersal. Perhaps a little premature for predictions like that but both teams have a litany of stars. Sunday hangovers may well be a deciding factor. Based on the fact that the Saints seem to enjoy a Saturday night Shandi a little more im tipping an upset over the Cup holders in what should be an absolute cracker. ONKAS 1-5

IRISH v FLINDERS....Both teams where unlucky not to get the chocolates in Round 1 and both teams had a lot of talent on display. This game really could go either way. Will be very even all over the park. Not sure of the guys name but FON have an exciting fwd sporting a fairly average looking head band. Looks a real talent. im gonna take FLINDERS 1-5

Agreed, great to have the season back in full flight!
Good for the boys from Na Fi getting a win first up, especially with B Rocca missing.
I would expect nothing less from M Doecke, superstar.
CT, can you please confirm if ZC still recieves his exuberent match fees even if he is not playing $$$

The game between Western Ireland and Onkas was 15 a side. Pretty average conditions (wind, wind and more wind) but a pretty tight contest overall. Western will no doubt be around the mark this year.

St Brendans vs Onkas on sunday- Game of the round! If anyone has a tranquilizer gun could they please bring it i.e. to shoot down the polish bear!

Good to see the forum is up and going. Has this had anything to do with Breaking Balls making a comeback (i hear he has a lot of free time these days for some reason)

Til next post...

The bloke your are talking about with the head band is Jonathon Negus, plays soccer for Adelaide City in the Super League.

Agree with wristy, was a very competitive game and at the and of the day I think it came down to Na Fianna having a little more class in the forward line. Not taking anything away from Na Fianna or Not making excuses but we had our four best forwards missing (Tom Stirling, Todd McSorley, Freddie Agius and Anthony Costalos) as well as a couple of key midfielders (Rhys Townsend and Nathan Elliott). With those boys in the the side I think we might have been a bit better in front of the sticks. At the end of the day you can only play with what you have and Na Fianna were the better side on the day.

Im hoping for an improvement next week and improve on my 0-1 coaching record :)

Mountain goats were out classed by a well drilled (except one) fitter, faster and more desperate team. conditions were average but that is gaelic park for you. We had a few lads come not prepared and have not played a game for a while. Onkas came out and smashed us all over the ground. We can only get better from this, was good to see a few old goats come back out and they would be better for the run, but onkas would have to be short priced favourites for the comp. Both teams played 15 a side and had 3 or 4 on the bench.

in the later game. it was close all game with port hitting the lead late with toasty dominating the score cards, but expereince got mitcham over the line. Both side s used a fast running style of Gaelic and both will improve during the season and challenge top sides on there day. not sure if this was 13 or 15 a side

the mitcham v port game friday night was a 13 a side match, due to mitchams 4 irish recruits enjoying themselves at their local watering hole rather than turning up!!!

as it has been said before, game was played in terrible conditions..lots of swirling wind and a wet ground. Port played well for a first up game, had lots of run and carry with a good mix of size and speed. they will definately trouble teams as they become more experienced. great for the hawks to get a first up win on the board, in the MVP votes were ozzie, gomez, soxy, mason, tommy g, rolfe & sutcliffe. On a side note, if anyone out their is keen to coach we are looking for someone after loosing Peter Parry to work commitments...

Captain bubblewrap C Carey, i believe is stepping in to take the rains until his ribs are healed... Probably gives you an extra 3 or so weeks to shop around for a coach.

it sounds like most teams will be able to play 15-a side most weeks. i know Port had 5 or 6 on the bench...not bad for first game and the conditions.
port would have been in strife without toasty and lynch, i would expect that the rest of the team will develop around them.

Stevey Ray Clay is as good as anyone who plays Gaelic in SA ATM  . I have watched him closely over the years. Good luck to Toasty and his mates for the year 8) ....Hot tip, Toasty wears No. 9 and he is worth the price of admission if we charged one ;)
