Honour for Alan Stewart

Postby Big Phil » Sun Sep 26, 2010 10:44 am

Great to see in the Sunday Mail today Alan Stewart being recognised for the fantastic job he does spotting talent. He has a medal now named in his honour which will be awarded to the best on ground in the Maccas Cup Under 18's Grand Final. Well done Stewie...

TALENT SPOTTER'S MEDAL HONOUR

FOR almost 40 years, local teenage footballers have hoped to appear on a list of names created by football educator Alan Stewart.

And a similar theme will continue next Sunday, when the Alan Stewart Medal is presented to the best and fairest player in the Under 18 Macca's Cup grand final.

Glenelg's Craig Pitt, who was best in the Tigers triumph over Port Adelaide in the U18 final last year, was retrospectively awarded his medal by Stewart on Friday.

The new honour places Stewart alongside SA footy greats Jack Oatey and Bob Lee, whose names adorn the medal for the best player in the league and reserves grand final respectively.

"There are a lot of worthy people in South Australian footy that could have easily been on the medal as well", Stewart said. "I'm very proud to have my name on it".

Stewart has devoted most of his career to talent identification since first guiding SA's Teal Cup team in 1979.

Now a development mentor at Adelaide, he also coached Centra District for five years between 1991 and 1995 and is credited with laying the foundation for the club's current SANFL dominance.

Congrats also to Craig Pitt from Glenelg for winning the first medal retrospectively...

What an honour, getting your name spelt wrong.

Hadn't seen it before, but at half-time (IIRC) of yesterdays coverage they showed an interview with Alan Stewart after the 95 or 96' GF (I'd presume the latter) and it was brilliant and just summed up why the Dogs have been so strong for so long IMHO .. Nothing but raw honesty, emotion and determination -There was no sugar coating, and it clearly highlighted a pain that wouldn't be healed until they'd reached the summit, really was incredible to watch.

Great to see this honour for a man who was a definite key behind the Central dynasty. The impact that Stewie had on our club can never be overstated - a true champion!
It will be an honour for players to receive a medal with his name behind it.

Well that's just silly. His name should be on the front of it... ;)

Seriously though, Stewart has played a part in Premierships at Centrals and at Port Adelaide as a talent scout early in our time in the AFL and now he has, with Adelaide...oh. Not much really.

Well done on naming a medal after a very deserving servant of SA Football.

I think that interview was after the 96 loss. He then resigned. I remember being doubly disappointed by both the loss and losing such a great coach. But in hindsight he knew better - he felt that he had taken the club as far as he could and he left but left us with the foundation for later success.

I believe that his contribution to Port Power enabled them to have the personnel for their flag and the results will come through for the Crows. He does not get instant success but builds over the long period. The Power were very silly to let him go.

To me the the medal is named after him more his contribution to SA Teal Cup teams in the 80s when we used to dominate the competition in the 80s more so for what he did in the 90s and 00s ('though worthy as they are). More appropriate for a junior award to recognise what he did with junior footballers rather than senior footballers.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Stewart resigned after 95.

He did, after he saw his own reaction on tape after the side won the prelim he realised that was enough. He never took a moment to enjoy that win.

Hear Hear. When players from that era are asked "most significant influence on your career" apart from a few "Mum" and "Dad" the answer more often than not is Alan Stewart.

A very bitter separation with the Power unfortunately.
