spot on wrote:Devilsadvocate you must be a board member. I agree it would not be easy being one but surely common sense was not applied in this case. If Lobethal oval is in such bad condition you don't cancell the whole weekend's games. Instead you find an alternative oval for the Lobethal games which has now been done and correctly so. Seems like a kneejerk reaction and not a lot of initial thought put into it. Anyway just my opinion for what it is worth.

Hahahahahahahahahahaha, I can assure you i'm not a board member.
Hahahahahaha. That's hilarious.
I guess with hindsight, everybody's perfect. Are you going to be putting your hand up to run the league from 2012 then?
Didn't think so.

But common sense should prevail and the board should have measures in place in case circumstances like this happen. An alternative venue should have been decided upon a week ago as a fallback in case of emergency. At least now the board has had these mishaps happen and so hopefully they can learn from their mistakes to avoid it happening in future (and with any luck, grow a few balls while they're at it).
On a positive note, I just checked out Blackwood's surface and it's pulled up rather well despite the weather circumstances and the fact that finals were only played there on Sunday. Bit boggey in places and there's minimal grass down the centre of the oval, but certainly the surface is 100 times better than the crap I saw at Birdwood last week and Uraidla a few weeks back and a lot flatter. The players might feel more comfortable keeping the ball on the wings though.

So do you think that the original decision to cancell the whole weekend of footy beacause of the state of one ground is a sound decision? The correct decision was eventually made and full marks to them for that, but it appears this would not have happened if the right people had not complained. Nothing wrong with constructive critisism, or do the board sit in a glass house and think they are immune from any flack at all.

Well said 'spot on'. Decisions like that can't be made without some sort of obvious backlash. Perhaps the HFL should've remained tight lipped until a firm decision was made after consultation with all clubs involved.

humour me wrote:seems like a few people have gone off before knowing any facts this arvo. So unusual for learned posters on this site. For anyone interested in actual facts, there was a pipe under the loby oval that burst around 11.00am this morning. The groundsman called the council immediately to see if they could come and repair the damage. Council arrived around 1.00pm. Council workers in consultation with Loby committee members and HFL board member decided playing surface could not be repaired and would be unsafe for play on Sat. HFL board member started immediately looking for alternative venue. When I was called at around 1.30pm to be advised final was to be relocated, Balhannah was the likely venue. I would think it unlikely that cancelling the weeks games was ever a possibility that was considered by the board but stand corrected if someone has any evidence other than footy forum histeria to back this up.
