From the chick in the Hut, the one who promises to reward you when you return with her "riches" .. Well she doesn't, she just takes the money and runs and leaves you holding the baby, so to speak :)

I've been a bit quiet on here lately! I've had a lot of worries this week and thus anything I'd have written would have been steeped in gloom like an emo kid's secret diary, or... I don't know, a pancake of sorrow. Something massive and indigestible anyway. ;)

Anyway, tonight I've finally cracked the Amiga emulator - wahoo! This is the sort of exciting thing I get up to on a Friday night. So now I'm venturing down memory lane with a game we all used to play in primary school - I refer to the illustrious Granny's Garden. I never could beat it in Year Three so I have a sense of unfinished business. I'm determined to finish this game once and for all.

I am faced with sixteen fir trees in a grid and I need to find the magic one. After selecting fourteen different trees I finally pick the right one. A clump of diarrhoea shoots out the top of it. (I think it is meant to be stars or something, to show that the tree is magic, but the primitive technology restricts the graphics somewhat.)

The next screen shows a cave in a hill. 'Can you see a cave?' If I couldn't, I wouldn't be playing this game, I'd be sitting in a chair at OPSM getting my optic nerve checked. To be perverse, I type 'No'. The bastard game doesn't believe me: 'I'm sure you can really! Do you want to go in the cave?' Determined to make things difficult, I attempt to type 'Maybe' but am only allowed three spaces. So I write 'Poo' and it doesn't recognise the word. I am forced to concede and type in 'Yes'.

The game informs me that I am now in the cave  and that the King and Queen of the Mountain have had their six children kidnapped by a Wicked Witch! Red for danger! 'Would you like to help the King and Queen?' I type 'No' and it tells me that I'm not very nice. Finally I agree to help the King and Queen and the quest begins.

Anyway, I'm off to try and make some progress in this stupid game - I shall be back with updates later tonight! :)

Some advcie for new players..... ALWAYS read everything with great detail within the 'Fisho's Frolics' thread because any lack of discipline in this area will only cause you to miss some very funny stuff indeed... ;)
I love grapes. With grapes, you always get another chance. You know, if you have a crappy apple or a peach, you’re stuck with that crappy piece of fruit. If you have a crappy grape, no problem-just move on to the next. ‘Grapes: The Fruit of Hope.

Well, I finished Granny's Garden on Saturday night... what an anti-climax. I am staggered that 1) I did not manage to complete this game in primary school; 2) that the ending was so piss-weak. For those who have never tasted the fruits of victory in the garden of... er, Granny, I'll just ruin it for you by saying that after you find all six children, it says 'The End! Granny says it's time for tea.' That's it. No flashing lights. No high scores. No eternally grateful King and Queen of the Mountains handing me a sack of riches/deed to fiefdom/concubine for rescuing their precious offspring from the wicked witch - who actually looks a lot like this bloke I used to go out with when I was sixteen. He was borderline illiterate and was afraid to catch buses in case people looked at him, and he had a pet lorikeet that he used to sic on me whenever I did something awful like beat him at PlayStation. Anyway, here's a picture of the witch:

In conclusion: Granny's Garden can go and get f***ed.

There are heaps of abandonware archives around, you've only got to google them. ;) Quite often you have to download an emulator to play the games but they're pretty straightforward.

Last year I went through a phase of reliving my childhood via those Sierra games - a lot of merrily wasted hours. My fave is still the original Quest for Glory 1.

Bloody hell I never got that far .. I noticed Paddlewars on quite a few of the sites I visited.

Will have to check out Quichey's "Quest For Glory" too.

Ahem .. Umm .. Am I the only one old enough to remember the test based RPG called "Adventure"?

I don't remember any of these games..

The only ones I remember playing are Lemonade Stall and "the Hobbit" and they were on the school computers, the good ol' Commodore 64's ;)
