"PORT Adelaide's presence in the SANFL is doomed, ending a 140-year football tradition, after rival clubs rejected the cash-strapped Magpies' merger with the AFL-based Power."

This will force the Magpies to sell their major asset, the Prince of Wales Hotel at Port Adelaide, to satisfy creditors and to generate funds to pay for a difficult farewell season in the SANFL this year.

So one comment says "almost certainly" and another says "presence......is doomed". Which one do you believe?

PORT Adelaide star Warren Tredrea has declared he won’t play for another SANFL club if the Port Adelaide Magpies fold at the end of the season.

The Magpies’ future remained in doubt on Wednesday when the South Australian Football Commission upheld the SANFL directors' decision to block a proposed merger between the Power and Port Adelaide Magpies.

The former SANFL powerhouse could be forced to sell off its only asset, the Prince of Wales Hotel, to remain in the competition this season and will cease to exist beyond 2010 unless another solution to their financial woes emerges.

etc, etc etc

So the new CEO might have the shortest tenure in the history of the game if this is correct.

Cool. More comments backing me up. Other solutions were found. Increased membership, sponsorship rapidly increased, donations....

I am not sure about people that sign memberships whilst under "emotional duress". If they sign up again next year, then consider them to be members.

The thing that sticks with me (and it's great news that the Magpies are doing so well) are some of the very ordinary coments that were made pre merger and immediately post merger vote coming out of Alberton.
It was unwarranted.
Should we have expected better though?

Agreed Booney. I believe the general footy public as well as the other SANFL clubs all believed there were other options for the Port Magpies. There was even the potential of a "white knight" at one stage. The talk of their potential demise if the merger did not proceed, came from Port or more "visibly' via Rucci. Everyone else seemed to have more faith.

speaking with a prominent accountant this afternoon & he stated that it's all in vain unfortunately. The Maggies are doomed & at the end of the day we can all take the piss but I don't want them to fold. I have spent nearly all my life, in winter, going to the footy & those bastards have featured too prominently for most of them. BUT without them, it won't be the same.

Back in the mid 90's when Sturt were close to the edge, they set up an account where people could put in donations and I tipped in a bit of cash.

My girlfriend at the time worked for one of Sturt's creditors and she had a crack at me saying I'd wasted my money, as the club will be gone within a couple of weeks.

15 years later we're still here.
It's all the SANFL's fault.

I still laugh at some Port old timer last year when we were all filing out of Alberton after another Sturt win complaining to his wife that Port were terrible and that Sturt would be gone on Monday.........I'm still waiting for this Monday to arrive sunshine....
