I think this is so funny. Even though none of his close friends know anything about it and Cricket Australia knows nothing about it, all the media have made their minds up that Warne is going to announce his retirement at a press conference some time today.

Only problem is, no press conference has been arranged or called, and yet the media are still telling us he's going to announce his retirement today.

Warne may retire, but why don't we just sit back and wait for Warne to announce it rather than all these idiot press people carrying on?

I said it before, it would be so funny if Warne called the conference and then announced something completely different. It would leave egg all over the stupid faces of the media.

Rumours coming from the top at CA...

1) Warne will actually announce he is coming OUT of retirement for the World Cup.
2) Langer has notified CA that he will never retire, and will finish playing test cricket when he is dropped.
3) Pidge will retire at the end of this series.

Just rumours. I don't know if they hold any weight.

HAIL THE GREAT MEN!!

Postby Rik E Boy » Thu Dec 21, 2006 8:40 am

Has anyone noticed a drop in Warne's effectiveness in this series? Quite righthly he has been praised for his second innings effort in Adelaide but Warney has racked up three centuries now and just maybe he's had a gutful. The major motivational force of regaing the Ashes is now absent and a milestone at home and Test farewell at the ground where he made his debut would be most enticing for the champion legspinner.

In all this a lot of people have overlooked Pidge, who actually has a better average than Warne and has more test wickets than any fast bowler. You won't be able to replace the 1200 odd wickets but the door will open for others. The next gen Australia team starts soon and it will be interesting to see which, if any nations can knock us off our perch.

But then again, maybe Hawk is right and Warney is just giving the Poms (and Stewie Magill) the big wind up.

1st day Melbourne. Bill and Tony are in the box calling the game.
Bill Lawry: and Panaser knocks it down to square leg for one.
Tony: That brings KP back on strike to face S. Warne. Peiterson only needs a single for his century.
Bill: but shane only needs 1 more for 700 wickets Tony, this great Australian, plus he's a Victorian to boot.
Tony: Warne comes in now to Peiterson.
Bill: Yes, got him piss off he's out, stick it up your know what Tony Grieg.
Tony: I can't believe it, the very same delivery that go Gatting out in 1993 has got Peiterson out as well.
Bill: Warne, Warne, Warne, Get him up here, I want to boof him 700 wkts WOO HOO, the greatest of all time, get him up here.

Couldnt agree more REB......we have been very lucky to have enjoyed the careers of the great Warne and McGrath...but time and age are catching up.....as Brilliant as Warne is his effectiveness seems to be not quite the same........either way they are two of the greatest of all time.......who have helped drag Aussie Cricket out of the shadows and back to number one.....I respect whatever decision they make and what a away to finish.........Thanks for the Memories Guys...(thats if the reports are true)... :D :D

If you are going to speak of who dragged Australia out of the shadows the order would go something like this..

1. Allan Border
2. Bob Simpson
3. Daylight
4. Steve Waugh
5. Shane Warne
6. Glen McGrath

The patient was well on the way to recovery by the time the early 90's arrived and the arrival of Warne and McGrath was the icing on the cake.

Shane Warne, take a bow. =D>

The greatest cricketer that I have ever seen and probably will ever see.

You can kiss the record for the largest attendance at a Test Match goodbye India, Melbourne will break that, should the game go the full five days.

My first born (hopefully son) is due in April and I'm sad that I can't experience such a wonderful career with them!

My Dad used to go on about cricketers from before I was born, but it was "history". I couldn't watch it live, couldn't experience it.
And this will be the same!

Unbelievable cricketer. This morning I was getting ready for work and Ms Diss was wondering why I was moping around. I was depressed :(

good point Diss - Ive always had a cricketing history seeing I was born at Memorial Hospital during the Adelaide test match that Dennis Lillie made his debut in...Dad was over watching the cricket while mum was in labour!

glad I now took my 3yo to training before the test and watched Warnie roll a few over from about 3 metres away...while he is unlikely to remember it Im sure one day he will ask "How good was that SK Warne Dad?"...

You're lucky to get three years in ... I wish I had that!

I was due on the 20th of December 1977, and I was born on the 29th.

Dad was watching the boxing day test match whilst Mum was in labour with me (and the days prior)

With Warne retiring,Martyn fleeing the game and country,McGrath on what most would feel the verge of retirement (probably playing the World Cup and then pulling the pin),does this give the likes of Hayden,Langer and Gilcrisht the feeling they are now more important than ever to Australia, and in turn decide to play on for some time yet? Perhaps Martyn and Warne had wind of such thoughts.
Perhaps Warne and Martyn are happy for others to be the "old heads" in the team.I think now Hayden and Langer will go on,where as previously I thought they may only go until next summer, form permitting.

There is no reason for Gilly to retire. He is still doing everything well and there is noone better than him coming through.

Fair call Booney, if Cricket Australia had any idea they would be "negotiating" the retirement timing of the likes of Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist with the players right now to ensure that the the next test series we play there is not 6 "new players" in the team. Some succession planing needed me thinks

No, to me 'the shadows' represent the period in the mid 1980's when Australian cricket well and truly lost their way after the retirement of the 'big three' in 1984. Of course, if you are to go further back Chappelli would rate a big mention due to his efforts to gain decent renumeration for test cricketers, something every modern player should thank him for.
