Made the move to Melbourne.
Well 2016 was a crazy year.
After working for 10 years in a small family business the end came in September. The business is still operating on a greatly reduced scale, and while I still have some input, it was unable to offer me full time employment. This scenario has been likely for quite some time.
So for the first time in over 25 years, I was out of work. Time to freshen up the CV and see what was out there. As it turned out, in SA not very much!
I did have some commission sales work to keep me occupied however I really only saw that as a temporary thing. The flexibility was great. But no superannuation, no paid leave etc is not my scene. I was in this space for around 6 or 7 weeks.
Earlier in 2016 I had a meeting with a specialist recruitment company (specific to my industry) who are based in Melbourne. For 9 months I did not hear from them.
Then in mid November I received an email advising me of a role they thought I would be suitable for. That's when this crazy ride went to a whole new level.
Interview arranged, flew to Melbourne, met the bloke went well, I left there knowing that I had the job. All of a sudden shit was getting real.
Got a phone call later that day offering me the job. How soon can you start?
Not wanting to miss out, next week I said. So that gave me about 5 days to sort myself out. The new employer would put me up for two weeks in the local quest hotel. They would also send me to the USA for 2 weeks training. All this happened between late Nov and Xmas. I was away for just on a month.
During this time I also needed to sort my own accomodation, furniture and all the other crap that goes with moving.
The plan so far is:- I have rented a 2 bedroom apartment about 15-20 minutes from my new office which is near Tullamarine. Wife and Daughter will eventually come over here as well. By then I will need a bit bigger place. We don't want to sell our place in SA. Most likely rent it out to offset costs over here. Ideally buy a 3 bedroom townhouse (can't be bothered with gardening anymore) and have a real estate portfolio. Something I have wanted to do, but been to conservative to risk in the past. No i am almost forced to do it.
So I am now 6 weeks into the job and finding my feet.
Things I am/ will miss. My local cricket club, my local golf club. The Roosters. My SA mates.
Things I can now do - go to more Hawks games, upgraded my membership. Go to way more events/ concerts etc.
So I guess I am now... a bloody Victorian!!!
I love Adelaide, and SA and it will always be HOME....
Thanks for reading all the best to everyone for 2017.

Glad to hear you've found gainful employment CM. Melbourne's great place to live, I've always thought it was like a bigger version of Adelaide.
Good luck buying a property for a reasonable price! Not a cheap place to buy anything that's close to anywhere decent.

Yep I agree with you Magellan. With work being on the Northen side of town, prices this way are a little more reasonable. Still I estimate 20% higher than home. Give or take. So if your not fussed about being close to the CBD it's doable. Brand new townhouse 3 bed, 2 bath, 2 car out here probably $400 k.
The area I am living in, it's a 5 min walk to a train station and 40 min ride to the G. I can handle that!

Sounds pretty reasonable. As for the inner suburbs, forget it. Great places to live, but impossible to buy into.
Hopefully you're also only a fixie ride away from a local organo-vegan food truck that sells wheatgerm stuffed-crust pastry burgers made out of Guatemalan goat's cheese from a guy in a beard, cardigan and trucker cap.

Cheers Spargo. Still got a bit to go yet, but I'm feeling positive about the move!

Ummm, no. Growling Frog is about 15 minutes away from my place. My clubs are still in SA though!

Great news, CM. Pleased to read that (thus far) everything has gone well.
