I am with windows live and have a hotmail address, but now when i open it to read emails, it closes all the time after about 10 seconds any advice please.

Don't use windows live and hotmail is number one. I don't, so I can't give you specific advice.

In general terms, the most certain way to get malware is to use Internet Explorer and visit an MSN web site. Then comes relying on Windows in built security programme. [I suspect there is unofficial MS "licenced" spyware that it lets through.]

I use yahoo [or gmail] addresses and have incoming mail forwarded from them to my ISP adresses automatically, and then download them from the ISP using Opera as my browser/email programme. I do keep Firefox for the occasional site that won't work with Opera. By doing this, if I change ISP for a better deal or because they are becoming unreliable I don't have to notify new email addresses to everyone - I just change where the yahoo ones forward to. I can also have copies relayed to both my home computer and that at work.

For registrations of software and forum registrations I use a separate yahoo adress that I never download from. I log into Yahoo for that and forward manually anything I want to save. Then when the spammers find that one I abandon it and start a new one for the purpose, and notify those sources I want to have the new one only.

I use ZoneAlarm Security free, AVG Antivirus free, and the free Gibson Research socket locks [www.grc.com]. I also use the free versions of AVG Antispyware and Ad-Aware and sweep at least weekly for spyware. Some programmes install spyware without telling you - like the IKEA "Design your own Kitchen" one for example.

Depends on the product... I paid half as much by purchasing IKEA cupboards for my laundry recently - a $600 saving can't be beaten by an Australian Made sticker, unfortunately.

Well im involved in the kitchen/furniture industry... and you can get the same quality (read: bad) for the same price if you shop around... however if you want decent quality, go elsewhere

im trying not to get started on this topic, just really annoys me that people are so hypocritical when it comes to foreign goods

ever since IKEA had started in adelaide 11 furniture manufacturers and 4 kitchen manufacturers have gone bankrupt due to not being able to be competitive in the market... thats about 100 jobs lost. Nice one!

Also please not that imported products do not have to adhere to Australian standards regarding formaldehyde emissions as well as other harmful ingredients which are used in the production of MDF and particleboard overseas.

At least things produced here have to adhere to those standards... enjoy your formaldehyde and arsenic.

Whilst you make some valid points (aside from the arsenic scaremongering - LMAO at that bit), why would I spend $1200 on cupboards that I can get for $600? It's a laundry and I'll be buggered if I'm going to spend $1200 on it.

If we can't compete in a particular industry we should get out of it - do more of what we can compete in and export it. Perhaps my view is a little simplistic, but yours is a little over the top in expectation, IMO.

Moisture Resistant particleboard produced oversea's contains arsenic. Here it does not.
MDF board produced overseas adhere's to no regulations in regards to Formaldehyde emissions. Here is has to adhere to an E1 standard or better.

In fact today tonight are trying to do a story on this as we speak.... hopefully it airs soon enough because some of the things ive heard are quite disturbing.

I know these Chinese guys on the Maroondah Highway at Blackburn in Melbourne who make really good stuff using real wood at less than you pay anywhere else. Wooden bottoms in the drawers, no compresssed board of any sort, and hinges and slides that really work. And they'll cheerfully make it to your design and your dimensions, including clever hidden compartments if you want them.

I tried IKEAS design software - I had no intention of buying from them.

being an i/net user for 12 years, it constantly bemuses me why people continue to use these free email services.. now i can understand if you're going away and all but sheesh the service your provider gives you costs so why not use all their available tools including space, email (i think bigpond offer up to 4 email accounts).. iirc the isp servers usually have quite good protection too - also advisable to make use of some sort of email washer to weed out the crap before it gets into the in box... just my thoughts

As I've posted elsewhere LC, ISPs tend to run well for a while then get to feel overimportant or oversecure, and then their service deteriorates or their prices go up, so, periodically, I change ISPs.

Then instead of having to notify everybody of a new email address I only have to access 3 yahoo addresses and change which ISP based address they forward too. When I fell out with one particular ISP my emails stopped being delivered 3 days before my contract with them ended - however I could still access the copies kept at Yahoo because I had anticipated this risk, then forward them to my new ISP based address, and delete them from Yahoo.

I disable the ISP based SPAM filters because they tend to be overzealous and filter out things you want to receive. I get technical references emailed, but often the sending address does not match the name of the server and some systems assume this makes them SPAM. I prefer to train my browser, Opera, to recognise SPAM - it learns when it sorts and highlights dubious ones and you click "Spam" or "Not Spam".

Similarly, I currently send mail out via Internode servers at home, but via Westnet at my office, and it is convenient to have only one incoming address that is received at both ends so people don't have to work out which address to send it to, to get it to me promptly. [And if I open another branch it can be received simultaneously in all three places!] So my emails go out labled as coming from my yahoo adress even though they actually get sent via Internode's or Westnet's servers not yahoo's, but if I send you something you wanted to receive it may be cut out as SPAM by your ISP without you ever knowing if you allow the ISP to do that.
