CROWS captain Simon Goodwin will retire at the end of the AFL season.

Goodwin, 33, announced his decision at 2pm today.

He is the first of the Adelaide's Big Four veterans to declare his intent to leave football at the end of the season.

Goodwin joined the Crows from SANFL club South Adelaide in the pre-season draft of 1996 - and immediately walked into Adelaide's 1997-98 premiership double. He has played 268 AFL games - and been honoured with five All-Australian titles and three best-and-fairest awards at Adelaide.

His announcement is set to start a major refit of the Crows list with fellow over-30 team-mates Andrew McLeod, Tyson Edwards and Brett Burton challenged to earn new contracts for next season.

Burton is recuperating from another round of knee surgery but last week declared his wish to play on. McLeod and Edwards have not declared their intentions.

Midfielder Nathan van Berlo is most likely to succeed Goodwin as Adelaide captain next year.

Nah probably not. I'd say he'd have fairly pressing business interests that are more important than getting a kick 45 miles away from the city... sadly for us ;)

I posted something on the "next crows captain" poll that he couldn't play on next year.

Third greatest Crow (behind ROO and MCLEOD)

Good player and all, and farewell to him.

Is there any other job where you announce your retirement a third of the way through your current contract and get the chance to have a farewell party every week ?

Yep good career indeed. He does play for Adelaide so I am going to struggle to sugar coat it any more than that. ;)
