Port Magpies $$$ Lose out $$$ to the Power

Next year will certainly be much tougher for Port Magpies according to the club's website.

Since the inception of the Power, $35 from every Power membership has gone to the Magpies in recognition that many can't afford two memberships. From 2007 though, that will reduce to being a $5 dividend per membership.

The Magpies estimate that this will cost them $42,000 - a decent amount of money in an SANFL Operating budget.

Can anyone shed any light on the background to the Power's decision?

Has the SANFL and/or the clubs themselves put pressure on the Power to return a better dividend to the (9?) clubs?
Are the Power distancing themselves from the Magpies?
How was $35 or even $5 endorsed by the SANFL who own the Power licence as far as I am aware? It seems a little unequal for the other 8 clubs when they haven't been receiving any dividend from the Power whilst they pay off their AFL licence.

It would be interesting to hear more about this.....

There should be an option on both Power and Crows membership forms to also purchase a membership of the SANFL club of their choice for an extra $xxx.

1) If you get a Power membership, you get membership to the Port Club, which is run independantly from both the Power and Magpies. The Power actually lease the clubrooms from the Port Club, hence why the Magpies clubrooms are on Port Road where the lease is cheaper. The profits from the Port Club are divided between the Magpies and the Power. Its not the Power distancing themselves from the Magpies, far from it. There are still events at the club where the Pies and the Power are together, like every Thursday night where teams are announced. It has nothing to do with the SANFL or the other clubs, so they can all go whinge like the bitches they are.

2) Anyone who says the Power haven't been giving dividends back to the SANFL and the clubs is an idiot and doesn't know what they are talking about. The Power has given significant amounts back in EVERY ONE of the Powers 10 years in the national comp, even years where they made a loss overall. This year for example, the Power made a $306 000 profit, $300 000 of which was given back to the SANFL. The same has happened for the last four (think its 4) years, where $300 000 was the agreed amount between the PAFC and the SANFL.

Your info isnt all correct Squawk. The Magpies didnt receive the $35 from Power memberships - that money went to the 'Port Club' (ie. the Social Club or "Footballers Club" as many SANFL teams called them in previous times). Of this, the Magpies received 25% of the takings from the Social club.

As to the background behind the Power's decision - i'm not sure at all; obviously neither are the Magpies or the social club, as it seems they werent consulted on this at all.
It is pretty disappointing stuff from the Power, especially seeing as though they have increased their membership prices significantly for 2007 as well....

As much as i disagree with the Power cutting the money they are returning to the social club; its not something that is unequal or unfair to the other 8 sanfl clubs, because most of them also run a similar style of operation. I dont know the specifics of each club so i'll just use a random example - say for instance you purchase a membership for glenelg. this usually involves becoming a member of both the "football club" and also the "social club" (ie. where all the bars, bistros, functions etc are held). It's the same with the Power - only now they are decreasing the amount that is going to the social club.
Also remember that (once again a random example), if u buy a meal in the social club at centrals, they get all the money - if u buy a meal in the social club at alberton, the Magpies only get 25% of it.

So all in all, whilst all the dealings are legit, as a Magpies fan i am pretty disturbed by the direction that the Power are taking.

And for you other guys - from 1870-1996 we are one and the same. But geez there's a fair difference now, and with decisions like this the gap is only going to get bigger.

No, that was paid off a few years back by the Power paying more than was required.

Can't agree with that pafc1870, as I heard on the radio a few days ago (from a PP representative), that the Power made their final payment of $400,000 this year (10 years @ $400k/annum= $4 million).
I can't comment on the SANFL Dividend- that would be in the SANFL Annual Report though.

Port's final installment on the $4 million AFL license fee was paid this year.

The sublicense fee (300 grand this year) paid to the SANFL is a fee unrelated to the $4 million AFL license.

From now on, the Power do not pay the AFL anything for the license, but they will continue to pay the SANFL a negotiated sub license fee just like the Crows do each year.

I dont think its too drastic. Now that the Magpies have the Prince Of Wales, it makes sense that they put all their effort into making that work for them. Id say thats why the change has occured.

Saw Clive and a few of the boys from Port Magpies dressed up in disguise collecting donations outside the Port Adelaide Centre Link office yesterday to raise money to help collect funds to sign Jason Cloke.

I have a feeling that the Prince of Wales hotel will turn over quite a nice profit for the Magpies, funny how they were able to just go out and buy a hotel and set it up immediantly when several other SANFL clubs clearly couldent organise a piss up in a brewery!

They have a huge debt on the borrowings but it will be a money maker for them no doubt. Look at the income they derived from it in 2006.

Just which clubs couldn't organise the piss-up? Norwoods Pokie venue is only being held up by red tape and court appeals otherwise would have been going last year. Sturt have now have Bar Zaar and a profit share in the Castle Tavern so they will be significantly reaping in the money and have more spending once debt is reduced. So who are you referring too because every other club is set up reasonably well fnancially with some doing exceptionally well?
