Quite happy with the selection of Lonergan, who doesn't deserve to be axed and Davenport who developed enormously last season in the Magoos. Some eyebrows will be raised over Reynolds but if the experience of Sam Hunt is any guide, he may yet prove to be a handy pick up for the Catters.

I dont think Hurley is that much of a surprise. In this day and age of posession football, you have to have decent foot skills. Unfortunately Hurleys deplorable foot skills at the championship has seemed to cost him an AFL spot.

If he can improve markedly in that area and also continue to develop and progress the other areas of his game (which are very good as it is) then Id say hes sure of a draft spot next year.

Zac Hier...he had a couple of decent games but maybe we have overrated him a touch. Both SA clubs at least would have had a good look at him. Crows went for Mcintyre, Port went for Grose.

Given these "Super Drafts" only come along every 4 years or so, Im sure guys like the two mentioned who missed out this year would be every chance next season in a shallower pool of talent.

IMO Hier is the best first year talent I've seen at the Eagles since Pavlich. Can't believe no one picked him up. Same with Hurley - he must be mature and show leadership to be picked as captain of the state and you can't really teach a kid how to be a ball magnet, but you can improve skills and I don't take the line about being too small - the Crows picked up a mature age jockey for instance. Hurley might be a bit like Stokes and get a chance in the near future. As for Hier, I'm not complaining that we have a ready made league utility who can play key position for the Eagles next year. He'll still only be 19 next draft so some clubs may be regretting not picking him up this time next year.

Hurley still made the All Australian side from the Under 18 championships so surely his foot skill were not deplorable !!!

I dunno All Australian selection at U/18 level aint the be all and end all for AFL listing...

Adam Fisher was an All Australian in 2002, Julian Burton 1990, how many AFL games they play......

FWIW I'm surprised Hurley didn't get pickup up by teh Power as their new development coach is obvioulsy a rap for him making him state U/18 captain. Obvioulsy Trevena hasn't got much pull* there yet.

Exactly. Look at the Power and Crows this year for example. Despite the superdraft they still picked up guys like Stewart, Cockshell, Gill and Campbell who are all 20+

Theres plenty of U18 AA players that dont end up being drafted each and every year for whatever reason

I thought Zac Heir was a certainty, Richmond are craving for tall defenders and they had one training with them right under their nose, the crows too have made made their intentions known for seeking Talls

Hurley is an interesting case, natural footballer, good leadership skills but the opinion seems to be that for his size he lacks leg speed, it makes you think, with the modern game will we ever see the natural footballer like A Jarman or G Williams get drafted

it will be a shame if we don't, and unfortunately, the commodity coaches are looking for at present is speed

if your a natural footballer and your quick, you a certainty
if your quick but not so much a natural footballer, your a chance
if your a natural footballer but lack leg speed, your a rough chance at best

There are plenty of natural footballers that have made it in the modern game. Roger James, Sam Mitchell, Brett Kirk to name a few.

If Hurleys disposal was adequate he would have been drafted. If he can improve that next season then he will get drafted.

Brett Kirk's disposal is very very ordinary almost tragenza like, Kirk is a great footballer due to his work rate and his 1%

I have not seen Hurley live, but I seen him interviewed prior to the draft, in his own words he said that the feed back from AFL clubs was that they seemed concerned with his leg speed

Never seen Hurley caught holdin the pill and I have seen him many times so leg speed not the issue me thinks !!!
