Placed in general AFL due to it being a bit of a barb aimed at the Cows, anyhoo:

What was going on with the distinct lack of fans at the Cows showdown on the weekend?

For far too long, the anti-Port movement (spearheaded by Cows fans) has taken great pride and joy in slating the Power and its fans for poor attendances. Yet on Saturday, when your club needed you most, you Cows fans stayed away in your droves. On a day when regardless of league positions or form, either side has a near 50/50 chance of getting one up over their closest rivals, you don't bother turning up.

A packed house of screaming Cows fans might have been enough to lift Adelaide over the line in the last quarter. Instead, the fans that were there left en masse after Robbie Gray's first fourth quarter goal to turn things around.

40,000 fans at a Cows home-game showdown? I mean what is going on? To make matters worse, looking at the ground at the end of the game, there was a LOT of black white and teal. Heck, Port should have asked for the sponsorship seat coverings over the usual 4 bays to help Adelaide look like they'd drawn a decent crowd.

Poor Cows. Everybody's figured out that it's no longer fashionable to be an Adelaide fan.

And many of those in attendance were leaving with 15-20 minutes to go ... Obviously the team looked shot on the park, but they were still only about 3 goals down with plenty of time left.

You really have to wonder about why people do that instead of choosing to stay and try to help.

Ahhhh the Ferrals inferiority of the AFC shown again..... You Ferrals can never have a go at AFC re membership and or crowd attendance! Hell you need black sheets to cover empty seats

You will find Saturday arvo Crows games have a lower attendance anyway..... plus like any team who is loosing games some fans stay away!!! This isn’t just crows supporters but AFL,SANFL even SAAAFL/country!

As for people leaving early many do so to beat the traffic, catch the bus(get a seat on a bus) when you Ferrals get 40k to a game you will realise that traffic can build up.

While I do follow the Crows and Norwood, I am not tribal enough to need to make them the centre of my life and my reason for being.
Nor am I so identified with them that I believe they can do no wrong and I should support them whatever pitiful performance they produce.

For me, watching sport is entertainment, for which one pays money, and I'll go if I expect to enjoy it when I do.
I make the same choices about the Theatre, Music, or Opera.
I won't be conned into the consumerist idea that I should be "loyal" and pay for any old rubbish in any of those contexts...

I am more likely to attend SANFL matches when Norwood get themselves together and produce good performances more reliably - which they may be about to do.
I'm not sure I'd sign up for an AFL club membership when I don't necessarily want to spend every weekend at football, but getting into Crows matches as a casual attender doesn't seem to be possible.

40000 at a showdown when your team is losing, is a fair effort, when you consider Port only get 20000 at their games when they are winning. Of course you are going to get less people at your games when you are 0-5. Of all people, Port supporters should be acutely aware of this. I don't think Power need to get too cocky yet. They did only beat the second worst team in the comp by a few goals and will be lucky to make the 8 anyway.

I actually thought the turnout was pretty good considering the context of the game, and I thought the Adelaide crowd were loud enough in their support of the lads for most of the game, I doubt another 3 or 4 thousand would've made much difference.

What does shit me to tears though is people leaving early. I'm sorry, but there's no excuse of that. Dealing with the traffic is part of the gig, leaving early to beat it just sends all the wrong messages to the team out on the park. You are basically yelling out 'give it up lads' by heading for the stairs. The game was still in the balance when people were up and leaving on Saturday, we were 3 and a bit goals down with 10 minutes still to play for **** sake. So frickin frustrating.

Ah yes, and i spose fans would have been "flocking" to catch the bus had the crows won........yeah port cover bays with black tarps, and? fact is port have lower membership levels than adelaide and for as long as i live that will most likely remain the case. Stats are showing that our average crowd levels over the year are increasing year by year and thats all we can hope for (it was published in the tiser last year and i dont have a copy). I am in agreeance that sat arvo attendances are lower than say a sat night or sunday, that applies to both port and the crows, there is no control over that, but there is control over staying at the game until the final siren, win lose or draw, and unfortunately that is a common theme with crows supporters that has been identified by many a supporter / media identity

Some people do that when they go to the footy, the more supporters you have there the more people have different habits and leaving early may be one.... each to their own and im pretty sure the players wouldn’t be worrying or even notice a thousand people out of 40k leave. Mountain out of a mole hill because port and winning and the crows aren’t!

Put the knives back in the drawer and worry about getting yourself more members and the game next week!

I don't think you are in any position to question attendances considering your mobs attendance figures. I thought 40K was good considering Adelaide's form this year. Anyway enjoy your time in the sun, we all know that it'll only be a matter of time before your season comes crashing down and Mark 'Foot in Mouth' Williams is in the gun again.

Well watching adelaide games on tv last year told me that traffic wasnt an issue after a win. As for port winning and crows losing, ive had the same opinion for years on adelaide supporters, and stats tell me that you have been more successful in terms of wins since 2004 so dont use that argument.

I havent got knives mate, im just telling you how it is and it appears that truth hurts.....

They don’t highlight it when a team is winning, it is purely the media coverage that highlights it to make and or add to a story. People leave early every game, ive seen it for years and will see it for many more. I am one that stays till the end no matter what, some friends of mine who are port, Essendon, hawks etc supporters don’t stay till the end! purely personal choice and in no way bad supporting because hey they have come when some may stay home.

Its a roundabout argument with no right or wrong answer and it wont change anything

No word of a lie i thought the same thing, i was sitting on the computer where i can't see the t.v but had the volume up loud enough to hear clearly.

When the last quarter started i decided to finally watch a bit and the first thing i noticed was that it was a Crows homegame by all the yellow in the outer but just hearing the game i clearly thought it was a Powers game.

I think the crowd was ok, increased numbers of Port fans there, and decreased Crows fans only highlights the fair-weather supporters of both clubs. If Port were 0-6, the Port contingent would have been at least halved, and the Crows crowd would have been higher - its not rocket science. 40000 people to a game between 2 teams who wont make the 8 is pretty good i reckon.

Good to see Choco's usual cr@p aswell after the game. When is the bloke going to realise, HE is one of the problems as to why they have trouble attracting market share ! Sore loser, and an even worse winner.

Crowd attendance is the least of AFC's problems at the moment.

How's that different from other weeks ? As far as im concerned, you pay for your ticket, its up to you what you do with it. If Port had 15000 stay at home, then they would need the whole outer side covered in a tarp.

Like many Footy supporters I follow my home club.
McLaren Footy Club, a SANFL Team and an AFL team.

I would have loved to watch South V Port Magpies
I would have loved to watch Port Power V Crows

I did however support My Local Club McLaren.
We had our big screen on showing the AFL and the other Tv on for the Port South game

I am sure the crows have a big country SA band of followers who all hate it when the crows play on Saturday afternoon
