How good was Buckley, especially his loose ball bump on boundry by wing!
And Brereton was obviuosly on the way out!

I love watching footy like this, it was pure, man on man, contests!

You can at Norwood, Alberton, Prospect or Woody ovals this weekend, just one of the reasons why i prefer to watch the SANFL over the AFL.

great post whufc
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Yeah some very valid points REB,

I guess the main reason I’m not as passionate is that I can't relate to the current AFL game, I wouldn't know the first thing about playing in a zone defense or creating a cluster, the most innovative structure I ever played in was the occasional ‘Pagans Paddock.’ If I were to step up on a football field now it would be like me trying to have a conversation in Swahili.

I consider myself a fairly educated football supporter and I can totally understand why the game has gone the way it has but I now find myself not understanding things ala Taylor Walker playing on a wing, or how a team such as the Crows can be so adamant they don’t need a Fevola at their club. I find I finish watching an AFL game now days and blokes I consider to have been handy not even named in the 10 man best. I still can’t understand how blokes such as Henderson, Donnelly, Sellar can be preferred forward options over a player such as Brant Chambers.

I find this very similar with T20 cricket, I really enjoy watching it and I see its benefits to the game but it goes against all the technique, concepts, tactics, and strategies that I was taught and used captaining junior state sides.

This is why I have gone back to playing soccer in the last 4 years. Soccer is still the same game I played in school, for the Eliz Downs soccer club and in the backyard with mates from all over the street. The concept and spirit of the game are still the same, the tactics are the same, a striker is still a striker and a defender will still chop you given half a chance. 95% of the rules are still the same as my father use to play with (only rules to be changed have been ones that were outside the spirit of the game ala two legged tackles.) Players from different eras can be compared and guys that are 40+ years old can still fill in in your ‘B’ grade and understand the game.

Sorry about the length of my reply

Perhaps it is because I've never played I can appreciate the (modern) game more. I played a lot of cricket but can't stand 20/20 but not for the same reasons I guess.

REB

LOL. I remember the clash and the perp but not the bloke who got squashed. I just remember Duckworth having many run-ins with the Hawkers over the years.

LOL .. Yeah definitely Walsh mate ... Bombers were kicking goals from everywhere and had just got their noses in front, then Dipper forced a nice stop to the play.

The way the Hawks dominated in 83 and 84 I think most people thought the break would be enough for them to re-group and for Essendon's momentum to wane, but no cigar.

I actually caught the last quarter when I went home for lunch today of the 95 Anzac Day game and it reminded me of how much better the commentators were then too. Might be just me, but I thought Peter McKenna and Robbo were great

Agreed- although Terry Wheeler and Don Scott were terrible.

I used to like Peter Landy, Drew Morphett and Sandy Roberts the best. And Bruce used to call the games better too.

Like the-big-Bang I also love footy today as much as I did back then. The game's changed but I still enjoy it just as much. It's easy to romantasize the good old days but I always challenge people to watch say St Kilda v Footscray from 1984 or Woodville v West Torrens and then tell me how it was so much better back then. Back then we had highlight reels of the matches of the round so we saw only the best bits of the best games. Our memory can play tricks on us.

Now we get every single game in it's entirety so the worst bits of the games are exposed far more than 20-30 years ago.

I thought the last 2 AFL Grand Finals have been fantastic matches. However, I found St K v PA last Saturday night very hard to watch.
In between signatures .....

Really hoping they show the 99' Carlton v Essendon Prelim among these games.

Amazing to watch games from 10+ years ago, that are slightly slower, have stacks more marking contests, players can use a reasonable level of physicality without being penalised, and there aren't stupid ruck infringements being paid every 2nd contest ... Who would have thought the game from the 90's needed so much changing?

I was at that game, was over in Melbourne on a footy trip. Still to this day the best game of footy i have ever been to, and thats including the '97 Prelim which i was at also.

Was a good game, but there was a better one 7 days later 8)

That's a fair point, but I reckon the bad games from any generation will be bad and you could probably say the same about plenty of games in the modern era.

I actually found the Port v Saints game excellent to watch ... I know it wasn't free-flowing, but the physical contests were great and the fact that the arm wrestle on the ground was mirrored on the scoreboard kept it a tense game throughout.

I must admit I much prefer the footy from generations past - That doesn't mean it was better, it was just more to my personal liking and perhaps like WHUFC, it better reflected the footy I grew up with, played and could relate to.

The one on one marking contests were much better in those days imho and thats a huge loss in current footy for me ... Back in the good old days it was great to see a fullback and full forward go one out with either marking the ball if they were in a better position - These days the defenders only seem to mark as a result of a zone or the advantage they've received via protection from one of their 17 other teammates in the defensive 50.

The choices are Carlton v Collingwood 1970 grand final
