Very interesting footage

Postby whufc » Sun Apr 04, 2010 6:33 pm

Fox sports have just shown footage of the Jacob Surjan stretcher incident.

He goes down in a marking contest to which west coast run off with the ball and kick a point, Surjan is back on his feet holding his shoulder and then presents a lead for the kick out looking all good.

The Power players kicks long to the other side of the ground and Surjan starts to sprint across BUT wait a sec the Port Power trainers are already half way on the ground. One trainer runs to Surjan grabs him and places him on the ground.

The rest of the trainers with the stretcher get there, play stops they place a neck brace on him despite the fact he has run 25 metere at least since the incident and then gets taking off.

It was a little odd wasn't it. I reckon the AFL will look at it and undertake a investigation into it. Port might find themselves a little lighter in the pocket for it. Like their pockets aren't light enough already :D

For me the two wierdest parts

1/ The trainers and strecther was out on the ground the second Surjan went down. (no doubt it was pre meditaded that stretcher was out for next player down, they were way to quick and organised otherwise)

2/ The Port trainer placing Surjan to the ground, Surjan almost seemed to object and wanted to carry on.

Would you be saying the same if a team did that against the Power in the dying minutes of the game.

imho it didn't have any affect on the result BUT its not a good situation when coaches are deciding when and when not to use the stretcher as a tactic.

I think by the end of the week you will find that the Power will be out of some much needed money, especially if they show the foxtel footage of the trainer standing there with the stretcher ready to go even before Surjan went down.

I can see this being the beginning of a rule change or so forth.

LOL, please enlighten us as to the unfair advantage that this incident allegedly created for Port.

Ok so are you saying you don't mind perfectly fit footballers being stretchered off the field late in a game.

I much prefer to watch fit footballers actually playing the game than falling to the ground a minute afterwards.

This is the exact type thing that has blighted 'soccer' for many years and while a few on here may think there was nothing in it i'm pretty certain the AFL will be taking an extremly close look of this.

After the game (4 minutes later) he seemed pretty fit hugging and high fiving players laughing his head off. Guarentee he plays this week as well and of course he needed the neck brace on after running over 20 meters after the incident.

This cracks me up i would think Port would be trying to play by the rules and avoid all possible chance of being fined, geez i don't think Port are in a financial position to be handing money to the AFL.

The SANFL have amended the Stretcher Rule in 2010 so that if a stretcher is called for, the player MUST go onto it, and must remain off the ground for 20 minutes of PLAYING TIME.
ie. If stretcher is called by a Trainer at 20 min mark of 2nd qtr and the qtr goes for 28 mins, the player can't go back on until the 12 min mark of the 3rd qtr, even if the medical staff assess that he is OK after all.

This should defer any team considering it for use as a "tactic" to slow down a run on play or use as a chance for their team to re-group.
(not that anyone would of course ;) )

Not if there is only a couple of minutes left on the clock a player having to leave the field for the rest of the game isn't going to hurt their side.

If this becomes a reaccuring incident i wouldn't be surprised to see the AFL make a rule change similar to the English Premier League where only the umpires can call a stretcher onto the field.

Lest we forget the time Rodan was pulled out of the Norwood game at half time of the reserves as Shaun Burgoyne was a lete withdrawl with a knee injury - which subsequently kept him out of footy for what - 8-10 weeks? Seems like the medical staff at the Power are more than just a one trick pony after all. They are now up to one trick a season these days!

The only isssue i have with this is that a coach could use it very similar to a basketball 'timeout' especially in modern football where all the players huddle when a stretcher comes out, it gives him the oppurtunity to get his message across to all players at once, without play going on and it does slow momentum, especially if the trainers take a few minutes adding neck braces to players with shoulder injuries.
