Good question that one SD.
Know that David Spriggs tore it up at his draft camp some years back but has been a disappointment on the whole and looks like his AFL career is over but there is obviously many examples of this.
Interesting for mine that only 9 South Australian based juniors/players were invited to the draft camp and that (all bias aside) only three clubs at most seem to have any interest in Tom Hurley as he was not required at this camp and will only be at local screening. Looks like he's been given the rap of being too small and not quick enough but reading of the play and football smarts that you can't teach, make up for some deficiences. Compare this to Queensland where they had a record 20!!!!! players at the draft camp. Find it hard to believe that they have that many more prospects than us but I'll wait 'til draft day to see how many of those 20 get drafted.

Brent Renouf, he wouldn't be any relation to the woman who had that book out some years back called "How I made $3 million with only one c*** working for me" .

It does make you think whether the Greg William's of this world will get drafted, their is so much science involved these days, it's almost like trying to find the perfect athlete to coach how to play footy, rather then just drafting a natually gifted footballer

I disagree, some of these top 10 results wouldn't have made the top 10 a couple of years ago, the 3 km time trial results are pretty good for the top 5 the rest aren't much chop.

Only three guys could crack level 15 for the beep test.

the average score for teh standing VJ four years ago was 65 cm the top guys would crack 70.

Don't get me wrong some these results are excellent but what was an average scores in 2002 & 2003 are all top 10 scores this year.

it seems to me that they are going more for footballers ATM than athletes.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Know what you're saying.
Greg Williams himself had a fairly tough time breaking in as it was, imagine how he'd go now!
Tassie, you do have a point.
Know that a poster from footysa (who I don't think post's here and hope he doesn't mind me stealing his thunder) said about 12 months ago how a book called "moneyball" was one of the hot topics of the 2004 draft camp. It was a book about how Billy Beane, who was the manager of the Oakland Athletics at the time, built one of the most succesful teams in the 2002 major league baseball season with the lowest payroll in the majors by drafting and trading for guys on their ability to do the job, not how great of an athlete they were (to cut a long story short).

A great teacher of mine, David Parkin said recently that the results gained from the tests taken out at Draft Camp have no correlation to playing 50 AFL games, which is what it's all about, isnt it? It's just a reaon to get the 90 best Aussie young 'talents' together to test thier character.

I'll think you find RC that the studies conducted in 1999 and 2002 (I think) stated that no one single test (singular) at the draft camp can predict whether a player can play 1, 5, 10, 50 or 200 games. As is known to all and sundary teh draft camp doesn't test if tehy can play only if they have the physical attributes to play.

It is well documented that the draft camp has increased players draft ranking and decreased it, and has highlighted physical attributes of players to get them Rookie listed. I know one player who got 15+ and could run and jump 95 cm + on the running VJ, it got him rookie listed at melbourne, who then found out whilst he was a grreat athlete he couldn't quite cut it at senior VFL level.....

Camp is only used as a guide to see if players have the physical abilities to play AFl and to a lesser extent the psychological ability to play. The U/18 champs is the primary tool used to test how well players can play.

Unless you are a gun, like Gibbs, Gumbleton Hanson, selwood etc as that would have been known for the last 2 years after the U/16s champs and games played over the past two years at state league and TAC Cup level.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Brett Burton was one of the first drafted for his abililty to run and jump. He was only an Eagles junior/reserves player before making the crows list.
