Port's 07 Finals Chances

Postby Zorro » Mon Oct 02, 2006 11:54 pm

I had a wager recently with a couple of workmates that the Power wouldn't make the finals in 07. I have to admit that as a Crows fan it was more heart than head at the time, but on reflection I'm still not convinced. They've had a good year blooding new talent and will no doubt improve, but so should Geelong, Richmond and Hawthorn. Apart from maybe the Saints and/or Collingwood, I'm not sure who is likely to drop out.

I'm interested in the thoughts of others.

Port will not make it. Does anyone really believe that Daniel Pearce won't be tagged out of existence next season?? And that's just an example. Port's youngsters got rave reviews and with this comes added scrutiny. Think back to Nick Stevens breakthrough year. He was carving them up and then he started to get tagged and he hasn't had the same impact since. Some players get through this, like a Robert Harvey..other players haven't got through it yet, like a Gary Ablett. Pearce and other Port youngsters won't be able to fly under the Radar in 2007.

Port will probably blood more youth next year and that brings exciting performances but also the odd flat one along the way. Nope 9-12 for mine.

We'll be there. If they tag Pearce, then will they tag Peter and Shaun Burgoyne as well? What about Chad Cornes or Warren Tredrea.

The only thing that'll make us miss the finals is a crap load of injuries like this year, and bad attitude.

You know you are a worry when you start trotting out the St Kilda excuse book. In 2002-04 you suffered as many injuries but had the depth to cover them, this year you don't. You didn't make the finals for the same reason as Geelong didn't...not good enough. Expect a repeat for your blokes next season.

We weren't as deep this year because we didn't have the players with experience, but now those players have experience, and some of them have become vital players to this team, so we'll be alot deeper next year. This was probably the year we needed.

We'll be back in the finals next year, and we'll make some noise.

I think the biggest reason the Power didn't make the finals in 2006 was consitency. We beat West Coast, Sydney and the Cows. Port beat these teams because they have some quality on their list, compared to the teams in this years bottom 4 (Bris, Kangas Ess, Carl) who were pretty ordinary.

PAP you are right in that the experienced gained this year by those players with <50 games under their belt is priceless and will be a major contributor to a rise up the ladder in 2007.

With some smart recruiting and dealing during the silly season, I think the Power is capable of playing in a GF in 2-3 years.

I don't have Port in my top 8, you got to be careful when rating sides based on a late season form run, they played some of their best footy when the heat was off and they could not make the finals, I recognise some of the young players took a step this year but backing up for a second year is also the hardest and clubs will pay a lot more attention to players like Pearce and Ebert

I'm not saying it's not mission impossible but they will need everything to go their way, including a good draw and a extremely good run with injuries

Sorry Proud, but one season or anything less than 50 games is not what I would call experience. School will still be in next year.

I think with Chaplin and C Cornes key defenders are taken care of, its key forwards that Port needs.

GWW

I think Cornes is the best CHB in the league, but will Chocco play Cornes at CHB for the year?

Chaplin, good kid but still a bit wet behind the ears and will have his good and bad days,

my opinion Port need another strong body down back, I will not be suprise if they trade for a player such as Polak

We need another tall defender,as Wakelin and Bishop (?) are at the end of their career.Cornes must,he simply must play at CHB,he was AA in our premiership year, why move him? What we need is a genuine goal kicker, now,I think in his best form Tredrea is as good as any, but, with knee injuries being a potential problem (fingers crossed they are not) I think he at best (because of playing up the ground) is a 60+ goal kicker.Mahoney can chime in with 30+.We need White to start to work towards being a 50+ goal kicker. If all goes well,I think we could expext to finish 8-11th.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Sorry Phil, but that's rubbish. We'll just have to wait and see. Nice to see that you have swallowed the propoganda that your Port contacts have handballed to you...they weren't good enough simple as that. Saying that attitude is not right is a bigger cop out than the injuries line. If they were good enough, maybe Choco has to go then???

REB, if you watched the players in 2006, you would see that there attitude was different. They came out with the 'We're Port Adelaide, so we'll win' attitude, which is a bad attitude to have for any team. We've shown how great a team we can be, we proved that when we beat West Coast (something Adelaide couldn't do), Adelaide, Sydney, Bulldogs. We've shown on more than one occasional that when we play with the right, we go back to being on of the best clubs in the AFL.
