Famous inter-club transfers ... why did they do it?

Since we are right off famous transfers, and just talking transfers, no-one has mentioned Martin Kahl leaving Glenelg due to lack of opportunity (stuck behind Peter Carey) and coming to Norwood and suffering from a lack of opportunity (actually being no good).

Only one problem with that. Kahl came to Norwood in 1980, Hartfield went to Glenelg in 1982. Maybe Hartfield was Norwood's payback

I recall Kahl playing 4 seasons in the Glenelg seconds and the commentators would carry on about what a star he was going to be .. until one day they realised he was 22 and still playing seconds. A bit like Sturt's Rob Magarey. The media used to rave about what a star he was but he couldn't make the league team. When he did leave to play in Queensland, the News splashed across the back page in huge print ... "STURT STAR QUITS FOR QUEENSLAND!!".

The Reserves were shown on TV in those days which enhanced the reputations of some very average players

Wayne Carty: Woodville to South Adelaide

Wayne Carty ... always wonder what he would have been like in a more fancied team. Not that I've seen him since he played, but I'd imagine he'd give Grenfell a run for his money on the scales now.

I saw him eating at Star of Siam a year or two back. Didn't look too monolithic.

Big Wayne's BOG for South in the last round of 1986 helped cost Woodville the double chance. He played some great footy for the Peckers in the late 70's - 56 goals from centre half forward in 1979. Also a D Grade District cricketer!

I shouldered arms to him in about 94/95 and got clean bowled. Was sharpish even then for my standard. Big, solid unit.

Back on topic, I wondered why John Paynter crossed from Glenelg to Sturt at the time. I have to admit, I didn't follow other clubs that closely back then, so I wonder if he had limited opportunity back in 81/82(?)

Was answered earlier about John Paynter ... he always wanted to play for Sturt and had the opportunity to follow Halbert when Jack went back to the club in '83.

Recruited by North Adelaide from Claremont, then transfered to Norwood, and then to Glenelg.

sean tasker torrens to north

With all due respect - Tasker was a ressies player at Torrens and IRC hadn't played a league game until he came to North so hardly a famous inter-club transfer as per the topic heading.

He was a very good player at North playing both up forward and kicking goals before finding himself one of the best defenders in the league and on an AFL list. His 1991 finals series was brilliant and one of the key reasons to us winning the flag that year. That still seems like yesterday as we North people cling onto the memory but 18 years have passed!

Here's another one for you ... Greg Whittlesea from Sturt to Glenelg (hopefully not mentioned yet).

Very good footballer in his day, won a magarey in '88 and played a handful of games for Hawthorn. Played around 250 odd games for Sturt and less than 50 for the Bays.

Anyone got a story on this one?

PS. I try to keep this topic on track but some think it's about any inter-club transfer!

Yep I think a Magarey medalist qualifies as a famous transfer unlike most of the others mentioned in this thread post page 3.....

Whitts comes from a big Bays supporting family down at Yank and actually came to the club via Hawthorn - he was on Hawthorns list for two years in 1991 and 1992 following the 1990 SANFL upheval.

He actually wanted to transfer to the Bays at the end of 1988 - according to a conversation I had with his cousin (his old mans brother Rob's son) but was talked out of it after winning his Magarey Medal. Whitts being the bloke he is probably felt some loyalty to Sturt (coming from their then Country zone of the Fleurieu) so stayed with all the upheval going at Sturt at that time.

There was a rumour in the late '70s or early '80s that Darrell Cahill wanted to transfer from Port to Glenelg. Jack was coach at the time and Darrell was (probably still is) a very good golfer at the Glenelg golf club.

Anyway, the story goes that Cahill's Mum rang the club and said don't be stupid, he's playing for Port.

I doubt whether there's any truth in it at all but it was funny at the time.

By the way, has anyone ever heard Darrell speak in public ... he was the SANFL version of the Flying Doormat!

That one is absolutely correct. He applied for a clearance and the club was unsure why he wanted to leave.
