That's how history seems to be writing the story of those 2 games as it's commonly said these days. But surely if any single player won those 2 flags it has to be the dual Norm Smith medallist, Andew McLeod. Or, in 1998, Ben Hart in the first half.

I am not knocking Jarman at all. I just don't agree that we won those 2 flags because of him only. He was one of many great performances across those 2 games.

There was only one person on the ground in both games capable of doing what Jarman did in the last quarter of both GF's. The man himself. McLeod was brilliant all day in both but he didn't tear the heart of St. Kilda or North Melbourne...........Jarman did. disagree? I'll put it another way.........If Jarman wasn't in either team would we have won either?

I reckon so, yes. After half time in both games our defence and midfield got right on top of the Saints and then NM. Jarman took advantage of that dominance to kick some of his goals from lace out passes. Then he added 2-3 from his own sheer brilliance (eg, 1st qtr 1998). But we won both by > his 2-3 individual goals. It's not as though every goal he kicked was manufactured by him only out of impossible spots. A few of them came down to simply kicking straight from set shots.

Blighty showed his game structure could cope with key players missing when Modra was injured in the 1997 prelim. It seemed season over when that happened but look what happened ... others stepped up (hello Shane Ellen). Do you think we would have won if McLeod didn't play? Or if Hart didn't play in the 1st half of 1998? Or if Pittman didn't shut down Loewe in 1997. We can't answer these questions for sure. All I am saying is that 21 or 22 players out there all did their bit.

I hope that we can say either Kurt Tippett or Patrick Dangerfield in 10 years time!
