Saints vs Geelong

Postby Squawk » Wed Jul 01, 2009 11:25 pm

Who will win?

Sportsbet have said Geelong deserve clear favouritism - who will you be tipping?

St Kilda 2.45 1.92 (+10.5) 2.00 (+7.5) 3.05 10.00
Geelong 1.57 1.92 (-10.5) 2.00 (-13.5) 2.30 4.00
Draw 67.00

Can anyone confirm if this game will be live on Channel 7, or delayed to allow the game to run straight in to the 6pm news?

Didn't Harley's comments to the media after being asked about what is perceived as patchy form on Geelong's part in recent weeks leave a few of you Cats supporters uncomfortable? Made it sound like they were content doing what they do without pushing for improvement; I mean he's right in that they're beating everyone else but they haven't been demolishing sides a la 07/08. It feels like the stage is set for an upset.

Saints 40+.

Harley's comments never make me feel uncomfortable. He is an articulate and intelligent captain. Recently the injuries tally was Cats 12 St Kilda 3 and here we both are at 13-0. The reason I have brought this up is because all year long we've heard about Hawthorn and Collingwood's injuries and not much has been said about the almost weekly occurence of a Cat player getting hurt. It is a bit difficult to demolish sides when you aren't at full strength. For the record, we weren't exactly demolishing sides last year either. I reckon we are playing much better football this season than last year so far in 2009.

If St Kilda win this game I wouldn't call it an upset either. They are above us on the ladder after all. ;)

Who cares who wins. I don't barrack for either but I'll be sitting down with a sixer of ice cold pales to watch it. Both these teams are awesome to watch..........gone are the dour, somewhat boaring WC v SYD games that were only interesting because the scores were always so close. I couldn't imagine either team will be to upset by losing this game either unless the scores were to blow out. I hope it's a shootout and the margin stays with a couple of kicks all day. The only hope for all other teams in the comp is that both teams got at it hard and both lose 10 or 12 players to injury. [-o< They WILL both be there GF day anyway. BRING IT ON!!!!!!

Geelong have no chance as Ill be there. Despite having something like a 60% win rate in the 00's its probably closer to 10% of games Ive gone to. :(
You don't have to be a rocket scientiest to work out which of the last GFs I attended. :(

Ive tipped the Saints 40+. ;)

Essendon vs Collingwood will pull 80,000............and reckon Geelong vs St. Kilda could pull atleast 70,000 being the game of the year IF it was at the MCG. So the AFL in it's infinate wisdom programs the second match of the weekend at the MCG to be..........Melbourne vs West Coast......... I know you can't pre-emt the ladder when you do the draw, and the MCG is Melbounes home ground, but if there is ever an argument to bring back Princess Park for the occasional match............this weekend is it. Docklands management are screwing the AFL and it's clubs and it's time the AFL grew some balls and did something about it. 20,000 footy fans wont be able to get a seat for the most anticipated game of the season..........BULLSHIT AFL!!!!! :axe: :finga:

My punting preview -

The big game eh? Looks an amazing match up on Paper, looking at the stats its quite clear Geelong are the attacking team with more options going forward but the Saints have it all over the Cats in the defensive stakes, they are averaging on 38 Inside 50's conceeded this season which is amazing (Geelong 44) and only average 3 less Inside 50's on the offence. Saints are only conceeding 59 points per game on average, from my observations this isnt there defence its their defensive skills up the ground. IF they can do this to the Cats they are an undeniable chance in this clash. Cats have been a bit off the boil if you can say that, losing 4 of their last 5 games ATS, and in the last five games they have averaged 3 more scoring shots conceeded and are scoring 5 less points per game than the first 8 games of the season. Not much but there is a significant drop off on all their early season stats. The Saints havent had this drop over the past month. We know the Saints play ES well, Geelong have only played there twice this year, an easy win against the Bombers and that close win against the Bullies which they should have lost. This will be a great tussle but I really think the Saints have the goods here to get the win. A part of me also thinks that the cats have been wound back a tad to try and peak for September, they know a top 2 spot is certain and it aint going to make any difference which spot your in. It wouldnt suprise me one bit if they have been putting extra work into their legs over the past 2-3 weeks. Saints +10.5 in what promises to be a close game seems generous to me and Ill be on it

Ling owns Dal Santo
Kosi will have Scarlo for company
We are understrength in the ruck but King is suspended
Their defence will have to play a bit deeper in this match and won't be able to run off Varcoe, Chapman, Byrnes and Johnson
The Cats WILL take on the Saint zone unlike teams such as Port and Richmond
Taylor goes OK on Riewoldt
Harley has returned to the backline and he will drop back to assist Taylor in particular
Tudor may have taught St Kilda to play like Geelong but WE ARE GEELONG
Saints haven't beaten us at this venue for three years
This game will be won in midfield and ours is better
We put as much defensive pressure on the opposition forward as the Saints

Geelong by 44 points.
