Id thought about Kelly, also Scott West but left them both out ... Maybe Roo could drop back to the HBF and Kelly take the HFF possie.

Rotter - Hear what you're saying mate, very difficult decision ... I guess I was considering the side would be expected to play todays brand of footy, which requires versatility.

Just thought i'd have a go at picking the best "AFL" side ever, which would be from 1990 to today (given that this was the date the VFL technically became the AFL.

Here's my side:

FF G Ablett Snr, Lockett, D Jarman

HF Ricciuto, Carey, Hird,

C P Matera, G Williams, Buckley

HB McKenna, G Jakovich, McKay

FB Roos, Scarlett, Wanganeen

1st Ruck
Cox
M Voss
Cousins

INT R Harvey, Dunstall, S Wynd, C Grant

EMERG Goodes, Judd

I was having this debate last night about the team of the decade and who would get the ruck spot Cox or Goodes. I would give it to Goodes as he has won a brownlow medal as a ruckman and Cox whilst he has been sensational the last 3 or so years Goodes has played fantastic footy for over 200 games this decade. Cox is close to having a 4th midfielder as a ruckman and Goodes is like having 4 midlfielders if he rucks.

I think Cox is more of a traditional ruckman though. Goodes is (according to wiki) "only" 194 cm, and i wouldn't have him as the best ruckman of the last couple of decades. To me he's more of a utility player, who can play pretty much anywhere, but as a general rule there would always be a better option in any position he would be playing (eg Carey at CHF, G Jakovich at CHB etc etc).

Won a brownlow as a ruckman..? Are you sure about that? Spent a lot of time in the ruck prior to injuring his knee but then transformed himslef into a pure utility player where he spent next to no time in the ruck. No way i would choose adam Goodes in the ruck in a team such as this.

Ablett Snr is the best I've ever seen, closely followed by Buckley and Carey.

2003 - Brownlow Medal success
In 2003, Goodes returned to the ruck position for significant parts of the year, in what became his best season so far. He played a critical role in the Swans revival and eventual Preliminary Final spot that year. In particular, his efforts were crucial in the Swans' win against Port Adelaide in the qualifying final.

Hird, he was the captain of the greatest side ever to play the bombers of 2000, also brownlow medal winner, norm smith, 4 time best and fairest, anzac medal winner and all Australian and also he has had more injurys than most the players on that list and still played great football.

One premiership hardly equates to the greatest side ever.

my lists in no particular order of who I think were great players in my time of watching footy

Forwards
Lockett - goal kicking machine
Carey - just his presence lifted all around him
Ablett Snr - freakish goal sense

Midfield
Judd - love the way he goes about it, will beat anyone one on one
Ablett Jnr - his work at stoppages is amazing, how many times is there a ball up with him on the bottom of the pack, it's either that or he's away, just gets his hands on the footy so much
Cousins - ability to run all day and win the hard footy

Rucks
Cox - easily the best big man around due to his ability to play as an extra midfielder
Darcy - similar to Cox, could play up forward and didn't look out of place

Defenders
Silvagni - not the biggest bloke but an amazing athlete, hate Carlton, loved him
Harris(Lake) - again maybe biased but i rate him, stands tall when we need him

Agree it's hard to compare across categories. Appreciate the WB bias, but I think Rehn, Salmon, Wynd or Primus could mount a case before Darcy. Also would prob choose a Jakovich or Scarlett before Lake Harris.

You could add another category of selection called "Leadership", with membership of Kelly, Ricciuto, Buckley, Voss and Hird, in no particular order.

Jakovich and Salmon would definately get a guernsey in my squad, didn't think about them...

there are so many different categories you could put players in.

Courage, Selwood J
Contested Ball winning ability, Judd, Ablett Jnr
Contested Marks, Richo, Reiwoldt, Lloyd
Composure, Hird
Nigglers, Liberatore
Seagulls, Dal Santo
Precision, Gilbee
Fatties, Dew

no player has the complete package, but some definatley tick more boxes than others.
