Cats make the Granny

Postby Rik E Boy » Mon Sep 18, 2006 9:17 am

Geelong qualified for the VFL grand final and will play Melbourne affiliate Sandringham after defeating Collingwood affiliated Williamstown by five goals yesterday in the Preliminary Final. Kent Kingsley and Nathan Ablett booted four goals apiece and Mark Blake controlled the rucks in a tight game which eventually broke open in the second half after Willy held a slender half time lead.

In what has been our worst season since 1990, the Catters could yet jag a second premiership for the season although they will go in as underdogs against the Zebras who have a great VFL finals record (the Cats last won the VFL in 2002). However, the big positives for Geelong were as follows..

Nathan Ablett stepped up in a big way. His body is developing and his kicking was a treat. For the first time I think he's actually going to make it.

Travis Varcoe has the potential to be another young gun. His foot skills are excellent and he has the pace the Cats (and many other mid table sides) desperately need.

Brent Prismall will be better than Maloney, I'm convinced of this. Put a solid lad in the number 32 for the Cats and watch em go.

Mark Blake will develop into a fine ruckman. If I had my way I'd trade King now.

Jason Davenport kicked two goals and looks a likely type. He is not on the Cats list but should be. If he doesn't get picked up by the Cats I believe he will play AFL for someone else next season.

Nick Batchelor played his first game back from injury and looks the goods also.

Todd Grima, better known for his 10 goal performance for Tassie in the under age championships last season, Grima has played in defensive roles for the Cats but bobbed up for two goals yesterday

The good news story about the Cats yesterday was not the four goals of the soon to be gone Kingsley (?) or the solid performance in defence of Henry Playfair but the way the above named stepped up. The Cats will have a clean out of players to be sure but I would expect all of these blokes to make big strides next season. Throw in Tom Hawkins and another top ten draft pick and all of a sudden things don't look quite so gloomy for the Catters. Our window is still open.

But who will coach?????

No Dutchy, not too sure on what the qualification rules are (I think that is what Booney may be questioning also).

Yep. Didn't do a lot yesterday but shut out Andrew Swallow (who killed us in the league match in Canberra) in the semi final against North Ballarat. Could end up in midfield for the Catters.

To be fair though, most of those people who said that barracked for the Cats! It WAS a wasted year.

it was a very disappointing season after the promise that had been shown the previous year. i was just trying to eliminate those bad memories of the year and focus on the positives, which at this stage is the ressies.

Then so is the SANFL.
If one person does it, it's insanity. If millions do it, it's religion.

Hooray, thanks for letting me know REB.
Its definately not the reserves, shame on the idiot that said it was.
I don't think Geelong have a side in the VFL reserves comp.
