Premiership Clock or Window - what a load of SHITE

I think Micky Malthouse was the coach that introduced the Premiership Clock theory, for me this theroy is a load of shite and an excuse for clubs to hide behind.

BOTTOM LINE, if you manage your list, have a succession plan, strong recruitment strategy and a strong focus on development and leadership your premiership window will always be open.

I think the Crows and Swans are examples of this, in recent years both clubs have not had top 4 lists but they give themselves a real chance, because they are top class in training, recruiting, list management

Those clubs who continue to apply the quick fix strategy, well maybe this premiership clock theory applies to those clubs.... but it is still an excuse for failure

cant agree SD - look at the past premiers

Cartlon, Kangas, Crows, Essendon, Brisbane, Port - all gone thru cycles of being at the top and then spending time at the bottom of the ladder...Brisbane being the classic example

like I said it is the easy observation, you are making excuses for poor recruiting and list management, since 1998 the crows have not won a flag but they have played consistent finals....

In regards to Kanag's, Bombers, Carlton, Power and Brisbane, maybe if they had a succession plan they would not find themselves in this position.

FOR EXAMPLE.....

The crows will lose Macca, Goody, Hart, Clarke, Roo, Bassett over the next 1-4 years, my expectation is the club are planniung for this now and developing our list, our leadership group and a plan to ensure all these guys do not pull the pin at the same time.

All clubs should have a dual focus, 1. the current season, 2. the future, if you have this dual focus and plan and implement accordingly, your window will always be open.

Essendon, Kanga's and Bombers are certainly guilty of poor recruiting and list management, whilst the Power and Lions have been relucant to play younger players until the need arises

If your club finds itself in a position where they declare they are in a rebuilding phase, then they have not planned effectively for the future, as a Crows member I would never accept this position from my club, starting preparing for life after Roo, Goody and Macca now

Adelaide need to win the 2006 flag, by 2008 they will be
getting early draft picks as the clubs superstars age and
retire from the game.

I believe adel wont be getting early draft picks, I think the club is planning now for life without Roo, Goody and Macca, hopefully Knights, Douglas, Maric, Van Berlo, Proplyzia will carry the club forward once these boys retire....

to be a competitive club, you don't just focus on 2006 and 2007, you need to have a succession plan now for 2008 and beyond

My opinion their are too many smart heads at the crows to allow the club to slip due to player retirements, this has been shown in recent weeks

agree with you S dog whilst the crows wont be grand finalists but I expect them to be around the mark for a finals spot during the rebuilding process and Mal I bet you were one of the dooms dayers who predicted Adelaide to finish bottom last year????

Kangas a classic example - 1994 to 2000, 7 prelims and not finishing below 4th for 7 years = no low draft picks AND opposition not wanting to trade with you because you are the measuring stick...you cant go on forever and need to bottom out (even though we havent done that like Hawks, Dogs, Carlton)

we kept the window open for much longer than most but we had our time, Crows are having theirs now....in 2 years time do you seriously think the Crows will be competitive against Hawks and DOgs with their quality all below the age of 24???

having said that I have massive respect for the recruiting team at the crows - I met and chatted with Fantasia for 1/2 hour earlier this year and the networks the club has around the nation in staggering....

You and everyone frustrates the shite out of me, you put so much focus on TOP DRAFT PICKS

Have a look at the crows list, how many top draft picks in that list, no many

But it is amazing what good coaching and development can do, top picks identifies talent but it does not give you desire or a strong team man, Mattner, Doughty, Shirley, Rutten are all good examples of this

Have a look at the All Aust side, 5 or 6 players that were picked up in the 3rd round

Where has St Kilda's top picks delivered

Maybe the Kanga's failed because they had no plan for life after Carey and the recruiting strategy STINKS...... too many recycled players, looking for a quick band aid fix

If you think top picks will save you club, give up now

Good coaching, training, facilities, player development all play a stronger role

No point drafting top picks if your program is up the shite

Excellent observation, being an elite junior footballer, this does not give you any guarantees to play 200 senior games

and what have they achieved? JACK

you keep saying that Kangas were only good because of one player yet you talk about teams being successful because they have team players? :?

Top 4 finishes when the football world predicts doom and gloom for the club

Two years ago, the word was that the list was shite and the club faced 3 seasons in the bottom 4 while re-building

Instead, 2 Prelim finals in 2 years
