The Honest Crows

Postby brod » Mon Jun 01, 2009 9:28 pm

I heard a story on the radio that recently the Crows players (playing group ONLY...no coaches) all selected six players from the squad that will NOT be with the club next year. They then had to stand infront of the group giving the players names and reasons for their selections.

The players that he named as getting anumber of mentions were not on the whole surprising, Kite and Sellar ect, but he then mentioned Brent Rielly.

Couldnt be a comfortable position to be in for Reilly

I wonder if Jacky was one of them, could explain the sudden drop in SANFL form. (Well apart from him being a kid).

is this really a good thing? i mean, i can understand that maybe it was probably supposed to give the guys an indication that their peers think they need to step up or push a bit harder, but i would think this would put a bit of a downer on the certain players mind-set, moreso than any positive spin.

I agree typical of the bs clubs get into these days, putting all the onus on the players with leadership groups and all that crap. Do the coach and his staff do anything anymore or just contract it all out to the players? If I were Reilly or any of the other 'exposed losers' I'd go ape at the coach. Gutless. Like Dennis Cometti implies AFL coaches always struggle to justify their existence and the ridiculous money they're on.

It does get around a player deciding, "I'm doing alright, my mates in the team and the selectors all know that, it's just that the coach is blind."
It gives them a chance to say, "Hmm.. the other players think I'm not putting in enough too."
Then they can decide to do something about it, and if they don't, they deserve to be gone next year.

It also gets the "leadership group" working with team management, rather than allowing a players versus coaching staff mentality to develop
[That would parallel of workers versus management set up that wrecks our industries, but suits politicians.]

I agree, it could also have the potential to create division among the playing group, plenty of danger in such a move (if in fact it did occur) one would think.

I'd be extremely surprised if this happened. Sounds like BS to me.

It may have been part of a reality check by the players after their performances against Brisbane and the Bulldogs

If it happened and it's helped the turnaround since then, then it's a good thing. The boys have been far more hungry and committed the last 2 weeks.

The modern trend is review and feedback by your peers (team mates) to make the playing group take responsibility rather than the old days of the coach kicking them up the backside to pump them up.

It may have happened but not exactly as it's been described here. if you aren't performing for your team-mates then someone's going to tell you about (either coach directly or your team-mates indirectly) so if your response is to drop your bundle then maybe you're not up to it right now anyway?
