which team does your partner support?

Postby dedja » Wed May 20, 2009 1:14 pm

This is a totally useless thread but bear with me ... it's a slow couple of weeks with just the state game.

Wedgie's post about his missus changing teams got me thinking ... my missus follows the Legs (and I still married her for some reason), but what about everyone else?

We had this bet that when our kids were born that they would have to support either the Bays or Legs, depending on who ended up higher on the table that year.

Now I didn't fare very well at all ... my firstborn was in '97, 2nd in '99 and 3rd in 2001. But I try to get them to come to as many Bays v Legs games with me as they can and they are slowly converting.

My youngest has definitely converted as she was given an after match footy by Mouse a couple of years ago at the Bay; no. 2 has hardly seen the Legs beat us so she given up on them, and I'm working on no. 1

So anyway, if you have a partner (husband, wife, boy/girlfriend, other), do they support the same team as you, and if not, does this cause sparks to fly at all.
Dunno, I’m just an idiot.

They say opposites attract...

My missus has NO interest in sport, let alone footy !!!

She has come to Tennis - Wimbledon & Australian Opens

She came to a World Cup Cricket Match @ Old Trafford

Even had a Crows season ticket in '93 & came to MCG for Crows first Final v Hawks

But, didn't get very enthused...

Fortunately, the little LEH's are far more influenced by their Father than their Mother ;)

My wife is about as interested in football as George W Bush is in the welfare of young Iraqi's.

My children were given no choice.

My wife not overly interested in SANFL but goes for Centrals because we live in Elizabeth.

Though the Dogs success is really starting to annoy her as her birthday is on October 4th. Which this year is Grand Final day and she knows where i will hopefully be at football park. ;)

In previous years its a been a day before the Grand Final so she gets a little upset as most of our friends love the Dogs and are saving themselves for a massive grand final day (we normally get to the ground at 8.00) and then a big night at the after party.

Her 21st was the day before the North Grand Final and we had a massive dress up party, i managed to drink a bottle of jagermeister to myself that night and then back up the next morning at 6.

So deep down i think she is hoping the dogs don't make it this year and she can have her birthday back.

It's funny because my birthday is September 25th which has been AFL grand final day a few times from memory.

I was a bit more selective, my gal loves footy and she's been to 95% of games with me and we've been dragging the kids along since they were born.
We even drive to Melbourne quite often for games.
I save heaps in taxi fares locally! :D
We even work in the same section of the same organisation (she earns more than me). Its lucky Im such a lovable guy otherwise she'd get sick of me! ;)

my missus is not local, actually from Geelong so supports the Cats but follows the Double Blues because I do and will come to games with me when she is not working
as for the kids, both not born here either but son will go to footy when he is not working and follows Sturt and daughter says she follows Sturt but wont step foot in a footy ground

Missus doesn't follow footy at all (which is fine by me lol) but understands the importance of Norwood and Liverpool Footy Clubs in my life, and the fact they will be forced upon our son.

My missus, is a home game member for the Bays ! Has always been a Bays girl from way back, despite growing up in wharfie central (Semaphore).

Her brother used to pretend to be David Granger, and make her be Cornesy  so hence she hates the Maggies !!

She follows Carlton in the AFL too for the same reason that I do (Steve Kernahan).

The kids have no choice. Glenelg / Carlton / Adelaide United / Derby County.

Your missus and I share birthdays ... work out how old I am and what I might have been doing when the Bays last won a flag.

I've got issues in Sept as no.1 & no.2 were born then, so I try to encourage the missus to have the party at the Zoo or Botanic Park ... then I can sneak out to Adelaide Oval. 8-[

Mrs smac is a direct relation to Paul Northeast and is a member of a Port Adelaide obsessed family, although she wasn't particularly obsessed herself. She converted to Centrals within a few weeks of us getting together and hasn't looked back.

Kids are all dogs supporters, no choice given. Each of them has chanted "You Dogs" around the supermarket at a very young age.

My missus is from Poland, but has been OZ for 25 years, just never been a fan of ANY sport...

Have of course got her supporting the Dogs but the very first game I took her to was the 2007 Grand Final and because North Adelaide are red and white (the colours of Poland) she wanted to support them.

I told her that we may have some relationship issues if she didn't support Centrals but she stuck to her guns, at least until after "her" team were pumped by 10 goals (sorry North fans) by the Centrals juggernaut she changed her tune pretty quickly.

Then in the victory lap by the players, she couldn't help but get "involved" with the celebrations and much to my suprise, when I turned to the side, there she is hugging and kissing the Gowans twins and getting a happy snap taken. Now she loves them and comes to most Centrals home games and cheers on the boys !!

She was drawn in by Chris and James' charismatic ways ( ;) ) I reckon, but that's part of the reason why I love her and will make her my wife in August ;)

reading some of the comments on here i'm glad i'm not alone (in their partner's not liking football/sport)

my girlfriend follows glenelg and comes* to the games occasionally

she said to me she realises the importance of the Glenelg Football Club to me when we won the Prelim last year.

as for the children, they will have no choice, my dad was 4 days old when he went to his first bays game in 1956.

Kudos to those who don't try and "convert" their partners and let them support whoever they want to. :-?

Not withstanding the fact that I love her dearly, there is absolutely no way I could work with my missus.

lol, I didnt convert mine, she chose to follow North by herself.
She thought most Bays fans and players were wankers anyway so I didnt even have to use the conversion stick, she was ready to jump.
She does follow the Crows though, I wouldnt think of trying to convert her as she could have me fired at work being one of the big bosses! ;)
