Just trying to work out what happened here amongst all the hyperbole

Was it just a tackle gone wrong, or was it a deliberate pick up and spear tackle?

What happened to the West player after this? Was he injured? Did he go off on a stretcher?

It seemed a separate action at the end of a tackle.

It was also out of character for Robert Shirley, who is a ball player and I'm sure he regretted it straight away, but it was very dangerous and there was a possibility of very serious injury.

Ben Fisher was taken from the field by stretcher and went to hospital for further tests. By that time he was in reasonable spirits.

Thiele has reported that Ben still has some numbness in the head and neck.

We should leave it to the tribunal to give a decision.

The whole 'Spearly' thing is so lame.

I would suggest the elderly lady hasn't been to many football matches pre-1990's if she's seriously worried about that incident over what happened in the 70's and 80's. But, I think that she was most likely referring to a mother who watches her child get injured in any situation on the football field - not just that incident.

The hysteria, driven by you, that says would this send a person to another code? Well, injuries happen in all sports and in most there is a chance that someone can get hurt if someone breaks the rules. Shirley broke them and will be punished. If someone moves codes because of it, after he has been dealt with by the tribunal then sh*t happens.

I take back my imbecile comment in relation to you but would add that you should be careful generalising in these circumstances because the way you see this thread ending up couldn't be further from my feelings.

I'll add here that Collins comments were interesting..... Commenting on cases before the tribunal??? Poor form..... Leave it to us experts on this forum!

As a poster on another thread alluded to, that was the third spear tackle of the day by an Eagles player on a West player. The other two were by the one Eagles player in the U18s and, to me, looked even more dangerous and were sickening to watch. What's going on down there at Woodville?

Does that mean that 25 is never paid when a player is reported these days? Loooooby's assault on Sheedy a couple of weeks ago was crude, deliberate and very late, yet no 25 was paid after the report IIRC.

I was timekeeping the u18s and did not see the 2 that you mentioned.

Well I was concentrating on the game and, along with a supporter next to me, did witness them, as did an umpire who penalised at least one of the tackles. Quite why he didn't report the player is beyond me.

50 metre penalites are quite rare in SANFL, with the more commonsense 25m penalties paid for minor infrigement. However, Richard Williams did pay a straight 50 against Clayton for his late hit on Jenner Saturday night.

Funny bayman must have missed the head high tackle that resulted in Daniel going off reluctantly on a stretcher after shirleys act .The umpire also reluctantly paid a free after calling play on and waving his arms .No report in that head high tackle while all others this year and last have resulted in reports.

And why did u not notice this one bayman mate .I saw the look on the westies player face when he did his act and he meant it mate.

I tend to agree with you Micky - I thought the bump on Daniel was wreckless (maybe that should have been reported.

Lets be truthful I missed the shirley one right in my face I blinked or looked away or something (perhaps I moved my injured knee).My lad told me all about it a cross between a bubba bomb and a black hole slam.Then he said the westies player was already in mid turn in the air so not something we should have on the footy field.

The Daniel one I saw it entirely .I saw the look on the westies player face something like white line fever .He was looking to stop Daniel and used his shoulder into his head region.
What really confused me was the bloody umpire .He was waving his arms around play on play on and then all of a sudden no its a head high tackle free kick .then the stretcher came out and the umpire demanded daniel go off on it.
No report for the head high tackle no 25m just the free .
Why in other games are head high tacklers reported and not this one .I even saw an eagles trainer ask the boundary umpire u will report him .Nope nothing .
and the umpire in charges name was I wont write it but it was yelled a lot .
One of the few games I have seen Eagles and Westies fans at logger heads.westies normally get along with us and visa versa.

For all of "baymans" hysteria, Im tipping the very maximum Shirley would get is 3 games but in all honesty will probably get 1 or 2 depending on varying evidence, history etc

It seemed pretty clear the umpire only paid the free to diffuse the situation. Certainty wasn’t head high, just a good hard hip and shoulder that was deliver with the right timing and force to make his head rattle. Was good to see the young fella gather himself and return to the field about 5 minutes later. Showed a bit of ticker I reckon cause he would have been in a world of hurt.

So you weren't the older woman who appeared from no where to throw abuse at the umpire(who shall remain nameless and should be in teh two's next week) .the only ones who thought it was fair near me were westies fans .the bump was right in front of me(as was the shirley one) .and these westie fans kept saying of on the stretcher for 20 minutes they couldn't even get that right.As was seen as Daniel spent perhaps 5 minutes off and then back on.

As i just wrote it was right in front of me I was sitting as close to the fence as u can get(ask sarge) .and the westies player certainly used his shoulder into Daniels head .
And I am more annoyed at the umpire for continuing to yell play on play on then no its a free kick . Pretty sure west had gone off with the ball by that stage.
