Personally i wouldn't put the Gowans brother in the category of rover, in the same way that i'd put Platten, McGuinness, Naley in that category.

Probably not, but there are some players who play more like rovers did in the past, than others do, like J Clayton, and probably Callinan.

Have to disagree with that. Callinan is more a small fwd who has a run on the ball in bursts. Chad O'sullivan and Slade are more the traditional rovers at Doggy Land. Clayton probably spends 50-50 on ball and up fwd but that is probably more to do with the load he is expected to carry for the under performing pies.

Jimmy Allan is a definate rover - spends 90 percent of his time on ball and rarely rests up fwd.

Young Boyd from South is a genuine rover and is bloody good too.

Yeah I agree Dreb, they were the blokes that in my mind, fit the old fashioned Rover tag .. Even James Gallagher could probably fit into that group (even though he's more a wingman imho), and a guy like Luke Crane certainly does.

The Gowans boys probably fit closer to the traditional Centremen or possibly Ruck Rovers at a pinch. (well traditional in my sense lol, those from the 50's and 60's could well disagree)

Well given that the modern terms are "go to" and "hot spot patroller" so yes I suppose that we don't have "rovers" anymore.

Drebin you can add Ty Allen to the list too. Spends the majority of time as our "rover".

I think one of the reason why we don't have rovers anymore per se is that with clubs having to have many variations for their set plays the desiganted rovers position is often interchanged amongst the onballers.

Yeah, it's not a matter of disagreeing CP because the ruck rover in the 80s tended to be more your Michael Aish type who linked and ran with the rover and centreman. It evolved with the pace of the game.

The term "ruck rover" really became obselete because prior to that, ruck rovers were precisely what they were named, players who were athletic enough to take throw ins, etc, but mobile enough to assist the rover and centreman in roving duties. Classic ruck-rovers of the mid-60s to mid 70s were Barrie Robran, Paul Bagshaw and Keith Chessell.

Prior to that they were larger types such as Neil Kerley and Fred Bills, and also referred to as "Utilities".

Yeah i wasn't so sure about Callinan, certainly agree that Crane is close to a traditional rover type.
